I am tired of complaints every year about individual awards. How many awards is too many? I would like to explore alternate ways of handling post season award banquets. Does anyone do anything different than give out the same old MVP, Most Improved, Coaches awards etc....

we give out one award and it encompasses everything: academics, leadership, on the field work, coachable, being a role model, etc. We name it after our mascot.

At the local team's banquet this year the coaches gave out around 15 awards to the team. The booster club gave about 20 plaques to various members for their contributions for the year (meals, field work, equipment transport, etc...)

The only individual awards we give out are for leadership, character, effort. No "MVP-type" awards.

We don't give any individual awards except those given to the kids that are voted all-conference/district state. We give each of the seniors something (this year they all received signed game balls) and spend quite a bit of time on them - do a recap of our season, talk about offseason program and thats about it...

Cooking and field work is unsung stuff and deserves whatever accolades it gets.

For our end-of-season banquet, we do a pot luck meal with all players, coaches, and parents in attendance. After the meal, I bring all of the players up by class and say something nice about each of them as the assistants hand out certificates, letters, all-league, etc. After we have had each class come forward, we give our only individual award: www.coachwyatt.com/blacklionhomepage.htm. We have been fortunate the past two seasons to have members of the Black Lions from Ft. Riley on hand to present the award. Then we debut our season highlight DVD and go home. Our banquet starts at 6:30 with the meal and concludes around 10:30 at the end of the DVD, but no one complains about the length as all parents enjoy hearing good things about their kids.

This sounds about the same as how we ran our banquet too. We gave out 7 Indy awards.

This is the path of our country. No one person should be any better than another. It is my personal opinion that people need to be recognized for being exemplary. "People will kill for a plaque or a name on the wall". It drives competition and competition is what drives success.

We GIVE no awards. This could be a battle of semantics but there is a philosophy that you should decide on as a HC and a program before you can end your season with appropriate closure.
Our players who are recognized for exemplary behaviors in various areas of character traits are voted by their teammates and coaches. They are recognized. The small plaque they receive is a momento of this important recognition.
If you have a lot of awards for the sake of awards, you really should rethink what you are doing. Our awards are connected to our team's code of conduct. If you have a code of conduct or a team covenance, just look through it and you should be able to find example of award/recognitions to use in your own program. Whatever you value as a FB Team/culture should be the things that are most recognized by your program at the end of the season.
The only "best of this" or "MVP of that" that we give out is the recognition the league or state has provided as part of their post-season honors. We'll have those players stand and be recognized for these honors.
We also only speak individually about our departing seniors. The rest of the guys are spoken about in groups. Our players have to wait for the end of their senior year before we make their heads big before their parents. It's something they look forward to for 3 to 4 years.
The only other recognition our kids receive is for participation certificates (Frosh, JV or non-lettering Varsity) and for Varsity Letters.
I can honestly say that we've never had players ask, "why don't we have an MVP?"
Something that I feel is important is that I ask all of my coaches to follow at our end of the season awards night is to keep their comments centered on the current season's efforts. I've been to many events where coaches go on and on and on about how good this player could be if he did this or that. We believe the end of the season awards night is to affirm what just happened over the past year, not next year.

We run our end of year program a lot like TD DAWG.
Except we do give three awards. The awards we give are all based on effort/character and are not tied to statistics.
Inspirational - Kid who leads by example.
Coaches Award - Kid who does what the coaches ask for consistnetnly.
Most Improved - A kid who worked over that last year and it showed.
Other than that we address position groups 3-5 minutes by their coaches and we talk about the Seniors individually.
All League, district, and area/state awards are anounced and kids stand up.
We spend a good amount of time Pumping up the Booster Club but cause they do so much for us. It's also an important transition time, we target Freshman parents to get on board.

We gave 6 plaques out to our team. They were for Lineman of the Year, Offensive Back of the Year, Defensive Back of the Year, Defensive Lineman of the Year, Hustler of the Year, and Most Improved Player. We also gave our varsity letters, football pins, and bars.

We give out awards, but non football related. We are the eagles so we have an Iron Eagle award for a freshmen and upperclassmen for weight room attendance in the offseason. We give out academic award for the highest GPA in each grade. We also will give one academic award for the highest GPA improvement in one year regardless of grade. Then we give out our Eagle Pride awards to the players that best represent what we want the program to be known for. That's it. We do have an MVP but that is announced at the end of the year school banquet. That we have to do. But it is not discussed at the banquet.

Giving out more awards today. Sometimes unannounced rewards/awards are a great way to create some enthusiasm at a time when there might be other distractions.
