We are playing a very talented team next week. Our starting QB went down last night. He should be back by our next game but I need some advice on a backup plan. We run the Airraid type spread mixed in with some option from under center and gun. Our backup QB is not ready. He has gotten a lot better over the past few weeks but he is a sophmore and is not ready to be thrown into the fire.
Our best player is our #1 QB and our Tb. We have been working on a package with our tb at QB like the Wild Hog. we had to get in it last night to finsih the game. We won because they could not tackle our Tb.
The problem is he can't throw the ball any so I feel if we have to use him at QB the team will pack the box and focus on him.
Some ideas from you guys that have been in this situation would be greatly appreciated. I knew it was a matter of time until this happened and our plan has always been to put our TB at QB. However, our next opponent's speed matches our speed.

Sounds like you need to reduce the package on the sophmore and have other kids step up. If you become one dimensional with the TB at QB against equal or superior talent, odds are that you won't be successful. Simplify it for the rookie qb so that you still have some pass threat while having your TB and others step up to help the QB.

I agree. This is where I think a lot of coaches make the mistake of not having a good screen game installed. If you guys have a screen game use that along with your TB running plays. That should keep the D honest enough for you to be successful.

For what its worth, the sophomore will be supported by the pressure being split between the TB and himself, and will be less apt to tank on you emotionally. If you can mix them in and out, and work the QB into the mix both in a platooning mode, and in your wild hog look, this will keep the defense off balance as to what to expect, and you can still do both. You may have to put your QB in at other positions to keep them guessing as to what you are doing at the QB spot, but they won't be able to adjust in one game. Just thoughts.
Good Luck
