I was not there, but I got this off another site I frequent....
In the first round of the playoffs in Alabama, it was Austin vs. Hewitt Trussville. Austin kicked a FG with under a minute to go to take the lead. The ref threw a flag because an Austin player didn't have his mouth piece in. They moved them back five yards, and HT blocked it to go to the 2nd round.
What's your opinion??? Right or wrong of the ref?

Absolutely a correct call. If it is in the rule book, it isn't the ref's fault. His job is to enforce the rules.
By the way, this situation is why I make our kids cut their mouth pieces off and not have them hanging from their facemasks.

Its in the rule book. The ref wasn't making anything up. Hate to lose a game on that, but if its in the book they can throw the flag on it.

The rule says wear a mouthpiece or get a five yard penalty. I don't see how any controversy. A better title would be "Lack of Discipline Knocks a Team Out of Playoffs".

In my experience refs who spot players without a mouthpiece (or helmet strapped fully) will call the player on it before the play, for obvious safety reasons. But in this case, the call is correct.

not a siily penalty but the refs cost us the playoffs....few years back we are playing our last district game...we win we are in(and so are 2 other schools)they win they are in with two different schools. With about 45 sec left we run a play down to the 3 .We were out of timeouts and the clock was stoped with about 30 SECS.We were gonna run a play and if we didn't score hurry up and kill the ball and kick a field goal to win.We ran a play and did not score and we line up to kill the ball and got a motion penalty with 7 secs left. Then the other team called time out.Our kids came to the sideline and we got the FG team together and told the center he didn't have to hurry because the clock would start on the snap. The ref came to our sideline and told us the same thing. The other ref went to the other sideline and told the coach he didn't have to call time out to talk to him and that he was not going to count it.The ref on our sideline was standing over the ball when we came out of the huddle so the center could not address the ball (which is what he should do) but the other ref started the clock. The ref over the ball realized what had happened and tried to get out of the way.Our center snapped the ball and we kicked and made the FG as time ran out on the clock. The other ref said we didn't get the kick off in time. We lost the game .We appealed the ruling and were told we should have not let the refs leave the field because once they do the ruling stands. Not only were we knocked out but 2 other teams were too.

I don't know the training the officials get where you from, but here in Utah they don't need a lot to start officiating games.

I know the team jang is talking about and they always find a way to lose. I don't think they have won a play-off game since 1993. Lack of discipline is right.

We ran into the mouthpiece call once this season. Kid was undiscipline. Was warned twice and still didn't put it in. Got called for it. In most situations the ref will warn the player first. Last night at a playoff game a kid was called for it. If you like your teeth and don't want 5 yards assessed...you'll put it in.
