We got knocked out the playoffs this week. After I take this week to put the season behind me I will be preparing for the 2009 season. I generally watch football dvds, read football manuals, and reevaluate what we did during the season.
What are some things you and your staff does?
Do you meet periodically throughout the offseason?
I was thinking about bring in my offensive guys once a month and reviewing some the things I working on.
How many clinics do you go to?
I look forward to the many responses I will get from this thread.

I think some of the answer lies in the results of the season. Was it on par? Below par? Surprisingly successful?
I honestly believe it is important to have one meeting..NO HOLDS BARRED..NO HARD FEELINGS. What does ANYONE in the room think can be done differently? practice schedule, practice intensity, practice content, film issues, scheme issues, player personnel issues... coaching duties, how you handle your jv/frosh teams... EVERYTHING. Just let the ideas go...

Shouldn't the meeting be held 10-0 or 0-10. we are having a very successful season this year but there are many things I disagree with. I still want evrything on the table

I look forward to the many responses I will get from this thread. One thing that you may consider is calling a playoff team and asking to watch them practice. It goes without saying, of course, that whatever you see at any visit stays with you.

I still want evrything on the table Definitely it should be held. My point was that the outcome of the season might affect the things discussed/areas examined. Minor adjustments vs wholesale changes of vision.

I agree that you should try to visit schools that are in the playoffs to see how they do things. I have done this in the past and have learned quite a few things. Many of us stick with what we know even if it is not the most effective way, we do what we know. Self scouting, film study, clinics visiting with other coaching staffs (HS and college) will make you a better coach even if you only learn one thing this offseason it will make you and your team better next year. As a HC I always conducted at least one postseason meeting to discuss the season. We discussed the depth chart, weight room schedule, clinics and the previous season with regard to what went well, what did not, etc. I always wanted the staff members to speak their mind without getting personal or angry. This was always very productive and many good ideas came out every year. Then at least once a month or so we would get together formally or informally to talk about our offseason progress.
