I was wondering if any one knows any schools that run almost 100% 5 wide ? with popularity of the spread and the passing game i was wondering if anyone has seen more of this type of a attack. Some schools i know that are very succseful with it are Kenton HS in Ohio, Fairview HS in Ohio and Riverside-Brookefield in Illnois. Was just wondering if there where more. THANKS.

Riverside-Brookfield is a lot more hype than success. They are the largest school in a terrible, 4-team conference and they only beat 1 team with a winning record this year. They got hammered 48-31 in the playoffs last night, as well.

The school I coached at the previous 4 years just finished their second season with the 5 wide. In two seasons 2 wins & 16 losses. Averaging only 10 points a game. To be fair in 2005 & 2006 the same school only had 3 wins. BUT offensive production was slightly better and I mean slightly with a more conventional offense. Defensive statistics however were much worse in 2007 & 2008 then 2005 & 2006. What's my point? If you're thinking about 5 wide, increased tempo, pass happy as an offense. First ask do you want your defense on the field more. Because if your offense scores in bunches or can't move the ball in the 5 wide, you give the opponent more chances to have the ball..

First ask do you want your defense on the field more. Because if your offense scores in bunches or can't move the ball in the 5 wide, you give the opponent more chances to have the ball.. Do you think they would win more games running a more "conventional" offense ? Also I think when you run a pass happy offense your philosophy on defense, special teams, and offense all have to be on the same page. Meaning on defense you cant be a defense that sits and reads you need to attack!! and be ball "hawking" and really stress the importance of turn overs, practice turn over drills daily and stress the importance of getting off the field so our offense can go back on and score. I know a lot of that is easier said then done for most but I think a lot of it is mind set of your team more so then the talents of your kids. Also I think you need to try to platoon some of your skill guys so they can focus on catching the ball and running routes. I talked to Coach Mauk from Kenton High School in Ohio and he said they platoon most of there kids, what they do is almost do a "draft" all there better talented kids go on D and the rest go on O of coarse the QB is a different story. Some of there kids on O may not even play at some schools but they get good at running routes and playing catch THATS IT they don't have to learn blocking schemes, they don't need to be physically dominate they just do what they do from when they where on the playground. And up front they can play with smaller guys that can stay in front of people again these kids don't NEED to be physically dominate.

Pulaski Academy in Little Rock, Arkansas.
They also refuse to punt on ANY down. Went for it on their own 7 earlier this season.

Sissy is a harsh word. I believe why run it for 3 yards because you dont have the right athletes, if you can get good at pass and get 5-7-10-20 yards a pop? Passing to score isnt sissy, its just another way to skin a cat.

That might have been said of *any* forward pass before the early 1900s.
