I need some opinions...err, pros and cons on making this move next year.
I'm the OC of a struggling team. My HC feels it would help if the OC coached the QB. We're terrible at everything right now (first year for this staff at a poor situation) so it's not like I'm taking it over because they're coached badly. However, the HC wants to get back to coaching the line, so he sees this as an opportunity for me to "coach the QB's the way I want them coached" and for him to coach again (he was more of a manager this year).
Right now I'm so frustrated I'm ready to say hell yeah, but I wanted to get someone else's opinion.

I think if the head coach will be doing more coaching in this situation, it sounds like a good idea. You may get a better effort from the OL simply because the head coach is working with them. Also, depending on what offensive system you will be running, I think there are advantages to the OC working with the QB.

OC's don't have to be QB coaches. I say put your position coaches in the position they coach best. As long as the QB coach is a team guy and buys into the offensive scheme- it should work.

Honestly, you need your absolute best coach with your offensive lineman. The offensive line is the most demanding and complicated of ALL of the positions (including defense). You have to get all five of those cats on the same page, or your offense just isn't going to click.
Whether that coach is you, or your HC, figure it out and your life will be a whole lot better.

Whatever is going to make your team better is what needs to be done. Easier said than done. If the HC is going to be fired up and coach the crap out of the OL, while you are freed up to make another position better on Friday night, sounds like a good move. I guess what I'm trying to say is, if moving the HC to the OL (and the subsequent movements as a result of the HC taking the OL next year) makes your team better, then it should be done.

I coach the RBs & QBs currently, and our OL coach is really good. Next year, if I can get an extra guy to coach, he'll take our split ends (we run the Wing-T), the former SEs coach will move to my spot, and I'll "co-coach" the OL. The OL is that important to me. I'm the HC and the OC, by the way.

Coach,
I'm the OC at a large school and I also just finished my second year coaching our QB's . Prior to coaching QB's I coached RB's for 1 year, and Oline for 5 years. My playing position was RB. I have found coaching the QB's very helpful as OC. We run a multiple formation offense and throw and run fairly equally. In my situation the QB has a lot of responsibilites in knowing how to read defenses, audible etc... My first year as OC I did not coach QB's and it was very difficult to coordinate. Obviosly there are many variables. I do believe if you run a more multiple offense that relies on the pass more, working with those QB's is very helpful. That being said you must trust your assistants. However it sounds like your HC has expertise at OL should that shouldn't be a problem. Also, whatever the HC invests in will be good!
