We currently have red helmets, we are thinking of going to white helmets with red facemasks? Has anyone made a major change like this. What do you recommend? The AD and me were talking about giving the red helmets to the New Middle school team and start buying new white helmets. There was also the idea of just getting the red ones painted and start buying white for the MS so that we all have the same color? Do the MS helmets need to be youth or can they be Adult?
We also will be getting new uniforms? I don't think we will be able to get 1-99 this year, but if we only get half do most of you give your old jerseys as the JV jerseys?

I would have the helmets sent out and repainted. Should save enough doing that to be able to buy new jerseys.
I've been contemplating new color schemes as well but cost is a factor.

we just went through the transition of white helmets to red. we painted the white ones red and we replace old helmets with new red ones, so in a few years they will all be red, not just painted. We also just bought 80 new uniforms. the varsity and jv play in them and the freshmen wear our old ones.

I am pretty sure when they recondition our helmets in the off season that we can get them painted.. And like mentioned above.. the new ones we purchase to replace the ones we lose will be purchased white.. We are also going to replace our away jersey's with the Rawlings compression fit jerseys.. Going to go basic white jerseys with red numbers and white helmets with red stripe.. with white pants and red stripe.. Our focus is going to be a working class team doing its job.. and we feel like we just need work uniforms.. plain and simple.. do not need all the frills..

I have been through that several times and if you recondition your helmets at the end of every year it is cheaper to paint them and then when you buy new buy the new color. White is sometimes cheaper if your color is one that requires them to be painted even when they are new. I agree with the previous post as well about saving on uniforms by buying simple uniforms without the frills. Good luck with it.

Our program just spent 35,000 on Three different Nike Jerseys with tackle twill numbering. We essentially have nine different uniforms. I know it has nothing to do with painting the helmets, but the kids love new stuff.
Just my two cents, I love the idea of white helmets with white facemasks.

35,000 on jersies? Thats our budget for about 7 years. probably closer to 10 years.

I meant white helmets with red face masks would look good. I can't modify my last post for some reason.
Yeah, I was pretty astonished at the new jerseys. I am not sure exactly what the cost was, but that is a close estimate. Nike Jerseys are sweet, however, I sincerely believe that the Russell Jerseys last the longest.

Are your facemasks already red? A coach I knew wanted to change to the nebraska look as well. His helmets were red with black facemasks. Painting the helmets would be no problem, but you can't paint the facemasks, you would have to buy all new ones. Just my 2 cents, making sure you take that into account first.
I do, however, like your idea of simple, workman-like uniforms. Good luck Coach.

clloyd,
I changed our helmets from a dark color to white. I thought about painting but could not get a guarantee that the dark color would not come through so here is what I did. First, went to our boosters and spoke with them about the reasons for doing it, some legit reason and some that sounded good like white will be cooler in the summer. Second, I started talking to the major helmet reps to find out about specials and/or if they would do trade ins for our old ones. I found out that I could buy 70 helmets for about $10,000. Third, we planned a fundraiser with the team to raise money for the helmets. We got the players excited by explaining that if we raised enough money (had to be over $6000) that we were going to buy new helmets. I found out the kids were more eager to run with it if they were going to get a Schutt DNA or Riddell Revolution so that is what we did. Our kids ran with it and came through. In the end, I went back to the Boosters and we decided to buy the helmets. Our boosters ended up only having to chip in $2000 and that was for 10 extra that I bought after the fact. Every kid on our team (senior to freshman) received a brand new white helmet at the start of the next season. The kids were fired up about the change and the "new style". Our parents were excited because the kids were in a style of helmet that was suppose to be one of the safest if not the safest on the market. We did it all for about $12,000. We took our old helmets and gave them to our MS and I encouraged them to trade them in for new youth helmets. Good luck in your endeavor.
