I am an assistant coach who has been given the OC responsibilities. I am also in charge of all off-season duties. This year we had a system set up as follows: Lifted and conditioned Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday with Friday being a mandatory make-up day. If the person missed more than 8 days (because 8 weeks of offseason, 8 Fridays for make-ups) they were to sit out games until workouts were completed.
We only have 6 seniors this year and only two of them completed all workouts. I kept pushing the make-ups days and the HC said he would take care of the make-ups. It never happened.
Our jamboree game all the kids got to play no matter if they had there workouts in or not. HC told me he would make them set out the 1st real game. Never happened. They all got to start over kids who are just as good and completed all workouts.
We also got a kid back that played a few years earlier. He was sent off the juvenile detention for stealing a car. He shows up the second week of practice and gets to dress out with rest of team. He was put in the position of our H back. He was third on our rotation. This kid is a beast but he is not coachable. HC told me he is the type of kid that you just have to let do his own thing. My biggest problem is he has jumped from 3rd to 1st string by game 3 with no work. He is starting over a kid that attended every summer workout, every summer 7 on 7, and every summer camp. I do not agree with this at all. In our last game he got us 2 penalties because he is not coachable. I told the rec. coach to get me somebody else. The other kid was in 1 play and HC put the beast back in.
Also, we had a kid last week not practice at all. Ho got more reps in the game than the kid who took up his slack during the week. I asked the RB coach why he was in and he said the HC told him to put him in.
To top it all off. Tonight our HC and another assistant had to go pick up the kid who got out of juvy and carry him home because he got in trouble again. They found this kid at one of the biggest drug dealers house in our community. At this house was one of our other player and he was stoned out of his mind. These kids will start and play this Friday night.
I have only been coaching for about 5 years and have worked hard to get moved up to OC. I started has a 7th and 8th grade coach. I am very frustrated. I love coaching but I do not agree with all the policies that are taking place. The problem is we have been successfull. We have only lost 3 games in 3 years. I feel like that we are not teaching these kids nothing about life. There is no other schools around here that I would like to coach at and I cannot move due to wifes job and new baby.
Any comments or advice would be greatly appreciated.
