I would like your opinions on practice length and style as the season wears on. Do you stay the same, or do you shorten it and lighten it up. I know that many factors influence this but just as a general idea, what do you guys do

Normally we practice 2 hours, when we get to the last few games on our schedule..the temps start dropping into the 30s and we shorten practice to an hour. The thing is..we do our stretching, warmups in the basketball gym..so when we get to the field..its an hour of practice. I would say by doing this..we actually only lose 25 minutes of practice from our normal schedule. We try to do as much inside as we can. When the elements are really bad..we just practice in the gym with helmets/shoulder pads and gym shoes. It limits some things but you also tend to get better focus.

Our players go both ways so we have to stay same length of practice usally 2:30. we may do less in Group period. still stay with fundamentals in indy and team time.

we shorten indy time a little but basically still 2 1/2 -2 3/4 hr depending if the Off can get their stuff together

We have to shorten because we have no lights, shorten indy focus on team if you have 2.

We slowly shave off practice time but increase the tempo.
Early season we practice 2 hours 45 minutes but this includes walkthroughs
By mid season, we are at 2:15 end of season we are at 2:05 but we become more creative in our practice structure and find the time to get our INDO in. Example: during Kick and Punt time (10-15 min) our OLINE is doing indo. By this time of the season (last 1/3 of season and post season) our kids are very dialed in and pretty much know what is expected day to day.
During PAT/FG or PAT/FG Block our QB's receivers are working routes.
Our goal is to keep every kid active for 2 hours on position specific activities
works for us.

Practice is about the same time wise but we do less contact. By that time the kids are banged up and we work even more on just getting things timed up. It becomes more of a fine tuning time. The big difference for us is contact.

Back in the day, we used to have 24 five minute periods. The the HFC would shave 30 seconds off each period to shorten 12 minutes. one minute off to shorten 24 minutes. we hardly noticed. We used to have a manager with a stop watch to time the periods. the great thing about it is that you had to have your chit together.
