For practice, I'd really like to have a segment timer, so that we could break things up and know immediately when each session would end. Those things are like $900 and up.
I'd also love to have a twenty-five second clock at practice, to give a feel for how long we have in games. Those things are a grand or more.
I know that we could use watches with timers, but I would prefer to have the times in both those cases displayed.
Does anyone have some suggestions, or ideas that you have used, for my timing wishes, that will not cost $1000?

if your school has a swim team, they normally have big clocks for setting pace at practice. maybe you can borrow it for the season? it isn't digital, but a clock is a clock

We used a track timer last year. The display was digital. The numbers were about 8" x 4" and the thing beeped every period. The beep was not as loud as I would like but it was free. I have also had a manager keep a stopwatch at practice and blow whistle and holler out the period every five minutes.

Coach- This is my 14th year in coaching, and I've wanted a segment timer since starting out. We spent 1000 (actually our Boosters did) on this model this year, and it is one of the best pieces of equipment I've ever bought. It keeps everything on time, it forces coaches to move quickly, it trains the kids where they have to be, and we hustle to stay on time. I don't know if I'd recommend this company, but this specific piece of equipment is good. I wish the horn was a bit louder, but you can hear it from about 80 yards away, and see it from at least that much. www.tomark.com/FootballStore/detail.cfm?Product=6188
