After starting off 1-2, I needed to shake things up a bit. Add in the fact that we have a Thursday game this week.. I decided to put on the pads today and have a normal practice minus the conditioning.
I feel it went over well and we got a good bit done.
We will see if it had a positive or negative effect this time tomorrow.

For a Friday game, on Thursday we have our shoulder pads on for special teams and defense (about 60 minutes). we take them off and do offense at the end of practice (25 minutes) we do not condition on Thursday

Once upon a time - about twenty years ago - I got soft and allowed our kids to go with half pack (Helmets, shoulder pads, and shorts at our pre-game Thursday practice.
My gut told me "NO" but my assistants thought the kids would get a lift from it.
We go through our offensive openers, some situations, special teams and defensive recognition and stunt review. Pretty basic stuff. We are UP tempo and very crisp.
On the day that we went half pack, we had a DT put his knee into our tailbacks thigh. End result? A fairly severe thigh contusion.
Never do we 1/2 pack except for our mandatory 3 days without pads in August.
No problems since.

Full pads in game unis to make sure the kids have what they need for the game the next day. I don't want any sorry SOB walking in at 4:00 with his game pants in one hand and his pads in a Wal Mart sack and the meeting is in 10 minutes. So, I forgoe this foreseen blow up and just have the kids have everything ready to go the day before the game.

I started by putting the kids in shorts and helmets. That was 9 years ago. Since then full pads on thursday. The kids have been more attentive and practice has gone better. One week I put them in their practice gear right after school on Friday and had an hour and half practice. Then we ate our pregame meal and went to the game. We won. Airraider each group of kids is different. Don't be afraid to change things to met the teams goals and needs.

I have always been a believer in full pads everyday. Last week I let assistants, administration, parents and players break me down into practicing in helmets, shoulder pads and shorts. During our walkthrough, a senior was lining up on the backup fg team and was dancing on the boy infront of him. I lost it. At first I sent the kids to the sideline and was going to start again but I was so angry I walked off the field and told my assistants to do whatever they wanted. I will never practice in shorts again unless it is mandated by the state.

I have gone pro pads on thursdays and I have gone full pads. I lik efull pads. I feel our kids have a different attitude when they are in full pads. they go harder. I want our thursday practice to be crisp and at full speed. when we wear shorts the kids think they can relax and we look sloppy. so we go full pads.

Well we ended up losing 34-32 in 6 overtimes.. We played probably our best game of the season.. Dont know if the full pads the day before helped.. but we will do it again this week for sure..
The funny thing.. we played in a new venue for us.. and I screwed up and had the players leave their pads in the locker room during pregame.. and we didnt have time to get them on.. so we did not pad up until 10 minutes before kickoff.. Another thing I might continue doing..
But on the other hand.. a random thought went through my head of how fun it would be to line up pregame.. and do Oklahoma right there on the field 30 minutes prior to kickoff.. lol

We are full pads Monday- Thursday. If we win the previous Friday then we will go shells on Thursday as a reward. We used to just do a walk through on Thursdays and we felt the kids do not take it seriously and the mentally check out. We do a simulated game on our game field and we thud up on everything on Thursday's and are still practicing for 90 min then 25 min of film.

Amazing. The other day the HC was obviously uncomfortable about practice and the way that it was going. When we got done with Defensive review and the offensive guys took over he looked at me and said, "this sucks doesn't it?" I said, "no intensity." We had 4 turnovers the first half and were behind 10-7 to an obviously inferior team. We won 35-13, but we are not good enough to take a 1/4 or 2 off every week. My HC has the kids wear their girdles out for every pro-pad day to eliminate the thigh bruise. I will definitely discuss this thread with him.

Airraider, a JV team I coached a couple years ago absolutely loved the Oklahoma drill and we did it in pregame warmups. It was very quick as the kids did a rep on offense, a rep on defense and then were done, but it was good in terms of getting them fired up and ready to go.
