One of our coaches on staff got a DUI 2 years ago. He is now about to try to get a head coaching job and is worried the DUI on his record will hurt him. I told him many times that people make mistakes and he just needs to disclose it and knock them down in the interview whenever he gets one. He is a great coach and great person. Just made a mistake. Am I wrong for telling him this? ?

Not in my opinion, coach. I've known guys that have done stupid stuff and now regret it.
I personally think every person gets one mistake in life.

It depends if he can pass a background check. If he was convicted of a felony DUI, I doubt he would pass a background check, but since you mentioned he is currently on your staff. he should have a chance.

It shouldn't hurt him. You can be elected president & have a DUI, I dont see why it should keep him from getting a high school coaching job.

I know a guy who got fired for having two dui's while he was a head coach. I have never known an assistant to not get hired for it.

If his record is clean otherwise then a DUI may or may not be a problem, probably not. Getting caught lying about it , either in the interview or on the job application, will definitely keep him out.
I wouldn't offer the information unsolicited but if asked he needs to tell the truth.

He needs to disclose it or they will catch it after they hire him. He then will be questioned about his character. I know quite a few coaches who have made the same mistake and are currently head coaches after the fact. There are many college and pro head coaches in the same situation a la Erickson, Gruden, Larusa etc..
