My principal is a former coach, not terribly successful by the way, and he constantly tells me how he would do things. This year the administration is very critical about every little detail.
He has told me that I should use my practice time to lift weights instead of lifting players before school and/or after practice.
He has told me that it is useless to show the players gamefilm. We normally watch 15min of film, either of our previous game or our upcoming opponent, before hitting the practice field everyday.
The relationship between football and the administration could be much worse than it is, but I thought former coaches understood the job and would be more supportive. Anyone have a similar situation?

I had a former coach on the school board, one on the radio (local community AM show, and he did the color for the games), one as the grandparent of a couple of players, and one as the principal. Nothing like small town politics! They did me a favor by firing me last year.

We have a former HC of our school as the Assistant principal and a former AD as the Principal. Both are extremely supportive.

Have a former coach and D1 player as a principle and he's been nothing short of fantastic- it's his 1st year and I believe he'll allow us the ability to grow and improve our program in ways that were impossible prior to his arrival.

Last Friday Night during our game I notice this guy on our sidelines mirroring our coaching staff as we move up the sidelines. He's got a school district polo and hat on, I figures he someone from the District AD's office snooping on us. I am not a teacher and I don't recognize this cat. He looks "official".
I give a heads up to our Head Coach, he checks the guy out and then calls we over, "Hey coach, meet our new District Superintendent, he coached when he taught for 15 years. Doesn't know where else to go on Friday Nights". All we could do was laugh. Apparently he was a pretty successful coach 20 years ago. He knew we had a pretty good team this year and was coming out to show his support.
Apparently he's a huge fan and was impressed with our game and how we worked with out players. Not bad.

I had one, who is no longer in Idaho. He ran our HC almost into the ground. He is now in Arizona. He was the most brilliant man I have ever met.

I've been on the other end of the coach-turned-principal deal.
When this guy became the HS principal he forgot where he came from. All of the sudden he got some power and he became a little Hitler. Football coaches were just other teachers and got no special considerations at all. This guy had been coaching for 15 + years, mind you. I had to leave practice early IN THE PLAYOFFS to take the 6th grade boys to a basketball tournament. He told us in a coaches meeting ( he was also the AD!!!) that the prom was the most important thing we do at our high school. Just a couple of the endless stories I could tell about this guy. Why do some people completely go off the deep end when they are put in a position with a little authority?
At my new school, I have the kind of guys everyone else is talking about, and it has been like a breath of fresh air. I'll miss a lot of things about my old school, but that guy won't be one of them.

We have a principal now who was a former football coach and the experience has been great. It all depends on the individual. He is at every game, home and away. He allows coaches to coach and does not interfere. He has an open door policy and admits when he makes a mistake. The best thing he did was have a meeting with his entire coaching staff and made the following statement. Do what you have to do, don't make me look bad in the publics eye and I will support you to the end. Make me look bad and we will shake hands and part ways. Our entire athletic staff's attitude is better than ever and our school pride is overwhelming. He was the right fit for our school.

I've had a few. Some good and some thought they were good.
I always loved when the not so good ex coach would come up to me on a Monday and say, "I'm not trying to tell you how to coach, but ........"
I've coached against him once. Beat him 48-0.
During the time he was my administrator we were 16-4 over two season. I'm sure we would have ran the table had I listened to how an ex-Wing T'er told me how to teach QB reads, Zone Blocking and Routes. During his reign we averaged almost 40 pts per game.
What a dufus.
The good ones wait until you come to them for advice.
