This usually doesn't happen to me but we were up 34-0 before halftime vs the worlds worst coached team. we have 6 players that go both ways. we have a huge test the following week. The starting TB/SS is literally puking on the field. I'm telling coach let's get him out. he says we roll w/ the starters until I say so. OK, so we start second 1/2 we return the kickoff for a TD and the next play we get an INT for a TD. so it is now 48-0 with more than 10 minutes to go in the 3rd quarter (we played in WV so they don't have a mercy rule). still no subs, finally the coach gets a couple of his favorites a TD so we are up 62-0. okay now time to put in subs, me being an a--hole says what positions would you like to sub should I put XX in now. kinda took the fun out of a nice win. Thank God none of our kids were injured. BTW had to put one more on them and won 69-0

I've had two's in before the end of the first quarter and in other situations I've waited until the fourth- it depends on how you scored and your over all assesment of how dangerous your opponent is. However if a kids puking he needs to come out- period!

Yeah it depends on the situation but if you are up 34-0 at half against an opponent that is clearly over matched then I think it is time to take out your starters. Especially if they are throwing up on the field.

I agree it depends. But I don't typically just rip out the 1's. My first wave of subs are for the seniors. I like to let the guys who I think will be in those spots get out there with the guys who will be returning and get them playing together as much as possible. Then later I will take out the starters, however, lets not get excited...friday night is not free for all sub time, if I'm starting a sophomore and I don't feel the guy behind him deserves to be under the lights, he ain't going out there period. I'm talking about a never came to weights, typically late to practice, screws around at practice, etc, etc type of kid. BUT regardless of score, the varsity defense will play the first series of the 2nd half. Those kids practice too and they practice to play on friday night, it's not their fault their opponent is not very good and I don't see how not letting them play their fair share is right. Especially early in the season. You do need to get your guys's feet wet and work on some things. I see this as a good time to get a chance to get some "Maybes" a chance to work with the first group against real competition.

Any one ever sub to soon and have to put starters back in? I thought the HC/OC was going to do that last week. Up 33-7 EARLY in the second Qtr and he subs. I am glad I left my D in there because the final was 33-7.

We played a team that was up 28-0 (I think it was early in the third quarter). They drove down into the red zone and then brought a full sub offensive unit in. Next play they fumble and we end up scoring two TD's after that point. Next thing you know, it's late in the game and we have the ball and are down 28-14. They were forced to bring the first team back in. We still lost but we made it interesting.

I run a split-back veer offense and have an excellent staff that coaches the kids well. I will sub in the 4th qtr if we are up by 21 or more or down by 28 or more points. In the middle of the 3rd qtr if we are up by 28 or more. Other than this I try to get our guys who play both ways and are on all ST a blow every now and then.

We always keep the one's in on punt and pat. we will sub for KO and KOR. We tell our kids never ask for a rest on special teams, if they need a rest they come out of Off and Def. That usually ends the bs real quick. I generally like to spot sub during a game. for instance, I will tell our starting DT you will sit the third series on Defense. IMO, preplanning takes ego and emotions out of the equation. but believe me,, if we fumble on the -10 the first team kid is going back in. again IMO it is easier to rest skill on off and lineman on def. I never like to break up my oline. (I coach oline and DC)

we have a running clock when there is a 35 point difference at any point in the game.
I will sub the second team qb to work with the first team rec and oline.
I will then start to sub 2nd team in.
I have a friend who has the following rule. when the other team subs the first team defense for the second team defense he will then sub in his second team.
he fells it is unfair to put his seconds in vs the other teams firsts.
