I really like Brian Billick's book on gameplanning. I have used it along with many other references in planning my practices up to the game.
Here's my deal though. Brian Billick has (had) an indoor facillity. We've been battling Hurricane/Tropical Depression Fay all week. We play on Thursday. We went to the gym on Monday. Just did team outside yesterday. I still don't feel like we got the reps we need.
I'm comfortable with our base game that we have been running since May. I'm more worried about the little adjustments against the team we are playing.
So how many reps do you try to require before dropping the play?

It really depends on how quick your guys take to perform...
I personally feel that for a Friday game that "the hay's in the barn" by Wednesday. If they can't physically execute the play on Wednesday effectively, then we won't run it. Thursday is all mental...
In your case, Wed. is mental- so if it wasn't looking good yesterday I'd be hesitant to run it.
Just my opinion
If I had to put a number on reps, I'd say that the play would be run 10-15 times live and effective before we run it in a game, but including the skill/drill periods, each player should have performed the individual skills anywhere from 30-40 times (including hand off, routes, reach block, etc...) on bags, mock drills, on air...

I agree that anything that doesn't look good on Wed/Thurs should be chucked. In this kind of situation (and being so early in the season) I would focus on what you know your kids can do. If it's a bit simplistic, well, better to execute it well.

If you truly have a system you should be able to install during the game. so for instance we have a backer plug A or b gap all week and we blitz the safety into the C gap. the safety gets hurt and I still want to blitz the C gap. All I would have to do is bring the team over tell them we are running a backer GO and everyone woould know what to do even if we never practiced it once during the week. (of course I would review it). This is because it is part of our vovabulary. I always talk to the team and tell them to expect adjustments. I don't know what they are going to be but I will give them hints of what might happen. This week we will be slanting to #xx I already told them if we can't stop trap we just slant the other way. I tell the kids this is not my magic. we are not panicing (sp?). it is part of the system. This is also the reason we are not a flavor of the week defense. we run our base and adjust from there.
