This is how we do it and I wanted to see if it is the norm or what you do different.
3 freshmen coaches we practice by our selfs at a slightly different time so the frosh are out of the locker room by the time the upper class is in.
We run the same D and O just scaled down. Freshmen are low man and we get the leftovers for equipment and other things.
Then varsity coaches (7) run the JV and Varsity at the same time for practice and the DB coach and WR coach calls the plays on Saturdays for the JV.
Just curious how every runs your program. I know this has came up before, but I am horrible with the search function and there are a lot of new coaches on here

I know this has came up before, but I am horrible with the search function and there are a lot of new coaches on here My first stop.. 4A school.. we practiced Varsity and Freshmen at the same time.. different areas.. the freshmen team had its own coaches and was its own entity.. JV was really just the group of kids who got to leave varsity practice early to go to a JV game on Monday. This was usually made up of non-seniors who were non-starters.. or the occasional starter who needed more work.. as long as he was a non-senior.. Carry over to last year.. which was my second gig.. 1A school.. with only roughly 120 kids in the high school.. and freshmen and JV were combined.. and the JV was basically like described above.. So all 4 grades practiced together.. then on Monday's when we had a game.. the freshmen and other non-seniors who didnt start.. or needed work.. could go.. move to this year.. first as HC.. 4A inner city school.. We will have freshmen during 2nd hour gym.. and will practice offense then.. will have varsity during 7th hour gym and will practice them on offense then.. after school the freshmen will get down to the gym and get dressed and be on the field by 4pm.. then everyone will practice defense together.. and then do team defense, team offense, and a special teams period together.. as far as fresh/jv games go.. we will have two teams.. some of the upper freshmen will play both games back to back.. and all non-starters will play JV.. |

We have 120 kids in our program - 12 coaches
Each position has a "VARSITY" coach, or two
QB - 1
RB - 1
REC - 2
OL - 2
LB - 2
DB - 2
DL - 2
We platoon our coaches but split up our practice VARSITY and SUB VARSITY. We practice at the same time - While 1/2 of our players are on Offense (Varsity and better JV's) the other 1/2 is on Defense (lesser JV's and Frosh)
The only time we intergrate our efforts is during Kicking game.
On Mondays our JVs and Frosh play and we designate 6 coaches to take care of these responsibilities while the other 6 stay back and work with the Varsity.
All of our coaches has at least one position playing on Friday nights so all are vested when the show is on. We don't send our assistants scouting as we want all of them to be there on Friday nights.
Works for us.

I wish we where like this. I will spend every other game out scouting. At least this year I am in charge of scouting and I just had the unfortunate duty of letting the 8th grade HC know that for the second year in a row he he will miss our biggest rival game because he will be out scouting. It sucks, but I missed it last year and since it is the first game of the year I wont have a scouting report so I will be scouting the JV and Varsity game when they play us. |

Don't you have any able adults who can handle scouting for you?
It doesn't take much to point and shoot a camera. We have 4-5 individuals who do our scouting for us throughout the season and we have enough coaching connections to come up with more video than we'd ever need on upcoming opponents. We get at least the previous two games on each opponent and as the season moves along, it's not uncommon for us to have 4-5 games on an opponents
We give our scouts a short in-service and let them go. We always get quality video and my three frosh coaches are my plan B just in case something falls through. The past three years, we've only exercised plan B once.

You are damn lucky then to have people do this for you. We have to scout with coaches when we do. Our region has a tape exchange set up so we get two games for our break down. I have seen films from scouts, who are coaches, that are basically useless. So you would be shocked on how hard it is to point and film. |

8 varsity coaches, 5 JV and 5 Frosh (6, 3 and 3 are paid, respectively). All teams practice by themselves at the same time on different fields. Var and Frosh run the same O and D, JV uses the same playbook/terms on offense (although you would be hard pressed to see the similarities on the field) and run a completely different defense with completely different terms. Equipment, practice facilities, jerseys, etc., all rolls down hill (varsity gets new ones, JV gets the old var, frosh gets the old JV).

You have a TEN-PAGE scouting report form that has to be filled out BY HAND, despite also having a film exchange? Yikes! I really think you oughta ask the header to take a long look at how much information you get from the scouting that you don't get from watching film -- and at how much /use/ that extra information is. Because, unless it's super-duper-hyper-useful, I would probably stop scouting -- it sounds like it's a real drag on the coaches' morale and availability, and most schools do fine with film alone. |

I would have to agree, but I am low man on the pole and a freshmen coach. that is 2 strikes against me already I dont want to dig a whole to deep. I just look at it as a positive and think the more football I am exposed to the more I will learn. It just sucks missing the games and not getting home sometimes until 2 AM! O-well its all football and one day I would like to be a GA so I better get used to the {censored} jobs. |

Why do some states still not let you film at a scout? Maybe someone can clear this up, it might have changed, when I was at a bigger school we played schools in Ohio and had to get the aproval of the school to film since they could come film us all they wanted. Is ther still no filming in Ohio? That has to be an old rule or something to even it out when technology wasn't what it is today.

I trip out on how JV's play on different days then the varsity.
Out here, JV's play Friday at 5pm. then varsity after the end of the JV game, about 7:30pm.
Freshman play on Thursday.
