I was talking with a couple of coaches at 7 on 7 camp last week and one of them was thinking about leaving schools for another one.
The HC at another school needed an OC because his had just taken a HC job last week. This guy was offered the job, but scared to take it, even though he felt it might be a better situation for him because he would still have to teach at his current school and see those kids everyday.
A few of us told him to go and a few said stay.
Should he feel bad if he wants to make a coaching change in the middle of the summer?
I told him to go, but I wondered what you guys thoughts might be?

A lot of my answer would depend on the teaching environment. Namely, teaching at one high school and coaching at another. That in itself is sometimes awkward. QUITTING COACHING at one school, but still teaching there and coaching at another...VERY awkward.
Not sure how it works where you guys are. For me here in South LA, Our district is pretty large (52 schools, 7 high schools) and it is generally frowned upon to teach at one HIGH SCHOOL and coach at a different one, (especially if the schools might face each other).

I would say if the other school is not in the same conference then it is fair game. I think he would be able to explain to the current kids that he wanted to be an OC and he had to jump at the opportunity and that he will still be watching and hoping the current kids do well.
If the other school is in the same league then I would have to say no way can you do that. We fight the students transferring and now the coach is going to transfer to another school that offers the same level of competition.

coachd, The district hopes that most coaches would coach at there same school, but because the district is short on coaches many do teach at one and coach at another.
The 2 schools aren't in the same district his current school is 5A and the other is a 3A.
I asked him about the teaching enivornment because I think that would affect him. He said he worried about the football players, but the rest of school were he teaches at could care less right now about the football team.
I did forget to mention one thing he is currently co-OC where he is, but he would like the chance to be a full OC.

I would have to disagree with one part of this : c He said he worried about the football players, but the rest of school were he teaches at could care less right now about the football team. There are one or two people who would care greatly. The principal and/or the AD who now has to replace a coach in July. If the principal doesn't handle it well, it could make for a MISERABLE 8-3 day in and day out....

At this stage of the season, if I was in this coaches shoes, I would sit down with my current HC and let him make the decision, kind of. Let all the cards on the table. He can't leave his current position if the current HC is going to be upset and felt left high and dry. If the current HC feels that he is needed for this season, the coach needs to stay. If the current HC says something like, "I understand and there would be no hard feelings if you left" (and actually meant it), then go be the OC at the new school. Coaching football is a networking business. A coach doesn't want a reputation of being a ship-jumper to carry around.
With all of that said, how could a coach not need his "co-OC" at this stage of the season? I would stay put.

Like the previous two coaches wrote -- I would make sure to talk it over with his current head coach. You never want to burn bridges - and yes, a principal/ad/HC could make life difficult for you if you stayed at one school and taught at another.

She doesn't even know they have a football team. With all of that said, how could a coach not need his "co-OC" at this stage of the season? He told us, his title is basically a title it was the HC's way of trying to make sure he didn't leave last off-season when someone asked about him. I will see him again at passing league tonight, I will tell him what you guys think
