OK I know this is strange but I have a few questions about whistles.
First, last year was my first year coaching and the greatest day of my life when I found out I was going to get to coach(Life Long dream/goal). So, I went out and bought a nice whistle and I said to myself I will keep this for ever kind of like a baby's first pair of shoes, you know sentimental reasons.
Do you guys still have your first whistle?
do you still use it or is it put away some where? how long have you been coaching?
OK. I have had this whistle for a year now(Damn good for me since I lose everything) I lost it a few times but always found it. well the other day I was getting ready for practice and I discovered my 4 year old thought it would be fun to put a marshmallow in the whistle.
anyway to get a marshmallow out of a whistle?
Could I boil it out? it is a brass whistle.
last question
does everyone on your staff carry a whistle or just the HC,OC,DC?
I did a search with no results, could I be the first one to ask about the whistle on here. ;D

Still have my first whistle. 26 years ago. Hard, metal thing. Used to buy rubber covers for them so they won't hurt your teeth. I use whatever plastic whistle the HC buys us. We all get one every year but I think myself and the DC are the only ones that take ours out. I am the OC and it really ticks me off when no one else has a whistle.

My boy, age two or three at the time, got ahold of my first whistle and lost it. So I bought another one, identical to the first. The original one turned up, and both are worn a little from a couple seasons use each so I can't tell which is the first one.
Glad my son isn't identical twins!

I actually had one of the first Fox 40's they made and retired it this year for a new one- had to use the original for 8-10 years at least I'd guess. I'd worn grooves into it where my teeth gripped it- I keep it hanging in my locker but it'll never be used agian as it's cracked and would likely split into pieces if I tried to use it.

Been coaching for a LONG time. I always like to break out that "New" whistle each year. One of those rituals that lets me know the season is here. Everyone on our staff has one - we have one person on offense and one on defense to whistle the play over.

First whistle, thats long gone, lost on a practice field somewhere, who knows. Been through 3 or 4 since then. One I have now, I've had for about 5 years, entering my tenth season.
Only two of us carry whistles, but that's by choice.

I buy ten whistles at the beginning of every season. They have to be plastic because I chew on them and when I get frustrated I bite through them. Metal hurts when you try to bite it. By the end of the season I am looking for a whistle because I have lost them or broken them. The kids hate when I blow the whistle because spit flies out of it. My first whistle long gone and I blow the whistle for O and D.

Last season was my very first season. My wife and son went out and bought me a nice new shiny metal whistle with a very nice neck strap. They also had an engraved dog tag that has a color football on it with my name as well. Pretty nice. I hope to keep that one around for years to come. On both staffs that I have been on, I am generally the only one with a whistle, but that will have to change this year because I tend to be the one yelling. lol

Got a nice Fox 40 that I have used for about ten years. I still have my first whistle...old metal beastie, but its pretty tarnished and bent up.
Dishwasher for getting stuff outta the whistle works well, just take it off the lanyard...that gets caught in the works...

Interesting post. I have the lanyard that I bought on the way to my first practice almost 12 years ago. I still use it for about half the practices. The whistle I bought was a fox 40 and I got lit up by the coaches for brining a referee's whistle. Too high pitch they said. They gave me a "better" one. I won't use a fox 40 now out of respect for their opinion! I change the whistle every few years. The funny thing about the lanyard is that it says Brine on it, and I'm pretty sure they don't make anything for football, but it was the only one they had that day. So I have kept it safe and plan to always use it. That is the only thing I have from that first year I think.

I have a brass whistle my wife gave me with my initials in it. It is is more green than shiny now. I still use it. I usually get a new one each season (plastic) to use as a spare. I had one on my carabiner until little man was playing coach and did like his old man and bit it in half.
A teacher gave me one of the new Fox 40s for secret Santa, but it must have been bought at the dollar store, b/c it makes no sound. I use it to mess with the kids.

Can't really explain why, but I've never liked using a whistle. I could count on one hand how many practices I've worn/used one probably.
