Looking for feedback, I'll try to give the quick version...... Part 1) Left team after 6 years as head coach (made post season every year in charge). Last season new H/C cant win a pie eating contest asks me for help...when I try to help my advice is basically $h!t on, being told I don't know what I am talking about, that could never work.. New assistant asks who the hell is he, ...vow never to work with this crew again. Part 2) Some time later, same organization asks me if I'd be interested in taking over older kids program...has to be my way, my people...no problem Part 3) Biggest rival finds out I'm available repeatedly, asks me to be an assistant as they admire the way we ran things, would love to see the Short punt, as they admit they had one hell of a time against it Part 4) Head coach of team I was asked to coach, changes his mind, and the organization now wants me to rejoin my old team (with the ungrateful bastards) as an assistant....not as O/C, not as D?C but as a backs coach......... What would you do

Short version - short answer. IF all things are equal (which they never are ) you agreed to run the older group if you could do things your way. They said yes to your "demands" so it sounds like you're their coach. Its kind of late to leave them hanging by going to the rival organization so my opinion is finish this season and then if you still want to move on you're not leaving someone in the lurch.

LOL, it's not what we would or would not do it's what you want to do- and I think you already know what that is. Tell them thanks but no thanks.

Good youth coaches are hard to find. Whenever I found out a good coach wasnt coaching, was well behaved and had previously coached for a competing program I sought him out. Poor decision makers rarely change their stripes at 30+ years of age, that seems to be pretty set by then. Those types can steal the joy in coaching. Im sure if you explored other teams in the area an opening will magically appear. Time to do it is right now. Well done and a Good lesson for all: Make sure you set expectations with the team you are going to coach for, dont compromise on the big stuff and be ready to explain your vision/mission/philosophy and reasoning why you need what you need. With your record and experience if you were a good sport, we would have "hired" you on the spot. Best of luck. Thank goodness this isnt a pie eating contest, Im a waif like 190 and many of my competition have me by 100 lbs.

I appreciate the kind words, they are having a meetng next week to determine who is coaching who (weight wise) If I'm told I have to coach the same group again I'm just going to leave, I may even sit out this season as well

You might want to explore "part 3" if the others don't value your advise sounds like the rivals do. Do you want to be a backs coach? Are the rivals asking you to OC or DC or STC? is that what you want? One reason we volunteer coach is because we enjoy it... if you do not think you will enjoy coaching with a certain group, then peace them out!

No coaching the older kids isn't an option anymore...IT's not that they didn't value my advice, there's alot more to it. I just dont go into details. I considered joining the other team, but it's tough to turn my back on an organization, that we helped rescue almost from extinction, if you will. And I'd be joining our biggest rival if I did. The rivals were offering me an assistant spot as O/C. Being head coach for so many years, you see things, the way things should be done, or at least the way you think things should be done. I don't know if it's possible to be in charge, then be relicated to coaching someone elses stuff, as a position coach, not that that's bad, I just dont know if I could make the transition I know why people volunteer...I've done it for years, I don't know if I would enjoy coaching on a team where your advice is eqivalent to dirt, especially, when you know you could do better, and so do they. Alot of people tell me it's bitterness over failure They also did this to one of my other assistant coaches, they wouldn't give him the time of day....sad part is he's one of the best coaches I know

To tell you the truth, I don't think I could be an assistant again unless I 100% agreed with the complete head coaching philosophy of the HC and was given complete control over the O or D. If I were you I would just wait it out and grab another HC spot next season.
I'm also very curious about the short punt you mentioned.

Similar confusing situation a few years ago, I opted to take assitant position. Had a great head coach, allowed me to be me, worked out great. If it is to distasteful to go back see if you can do something else in 'your' program. If you filmed games and helped other coaches break film down you would be building relationships for the future. When the opportunity come to coach again you will have a lot of goodwill built up to build a new staff.
Usually the ones that are hard to get along with don't last. Patience always pays off in these situations.

Thats what I'm thinknig, however I just found out all 5 weight class teams want me to coach them (get a warm fuzzy feeling) hem, so I may be coaching somewhere within the org anyway. As for the Short Punt...I'll tell you whatever you want to know, email me @ richkelly3@hotmail.com

Unfortunately, he's not hard to get along with, he's one of the nicest guys I've ever met, the problem is that I think he wants to be "called" head coach...not actually try to be a head coach. He came in with no offensive plan, no defensive plan, Nothing. He thought my assistant would know everything I did, and simply emulate that. Then there is the issue of his son, who is one of the best players on the team......note I Said ONE of the best. He would just keep giving the ball to his son every play. I'm going to steer clear of this one I think

God bless you coach, hope everything works out.
Every program needs referees. I am just a little out of shape for that, though.

Thanks Coach, I have a meeting, Tomorrow night, to discuss the situation, I was offered the position as OC for one of the older teams, but I think it may bring heat at the meeting as it was the coach who asked me not the administration
