We are a pretty rough inner city school.. our school sits smack dab in the middle of the roughest neighboorhood in Shreveport Louisiana..
With that knowledge.. one might think its a war zone everyday.. but its really not..
I only witnessed a few fights from Feb until May.. and only a couple more happened when I wasnt around..
But.. our school has a policy that if you get in a fight.. you are out of extracurricular activities for 9 weeks..
Now.. think about that.. thats the whole season..
Say your star QB is provoked by Joe Thug out at lunch one day.. and they end up fighting.. your kid is gone from Football.. while the other kid misses his 5 days and then comes back like nothing happened..
I havent pushed about it.. I just take it for what it is.. but at the same time.. I know kids will be kids.. and inner city kids.. will be worse.. because its what/how they live everyday..
Restraint is a valuable thing.. but only because its hard to come by..
I have been other places where you just get suspended and cannot come on campus for anything for those days.. including practice and games.. so you are out for as long as you are out of school..
but 9 weeks??
Anyone with me on this??

sounds like a school board thing (politics), more than an unrealistic personal policy (principal).
What used to be seen as an 'argument' or 'scuffle' is now seen as 'domestic terrorism' or 'sociopathic predator abuse' or something.....
my point is, whattayagonna do?

At our school (lots of urban, poor kids, white, African-American, and Latino), fighting is most likely going to get you 10 days out of school during which you cannot participate in any school activities.
Honestly, the fights between the boys aren't too bad...usually, there is some pushing and shoving, some namecalling, and maybe an occassional punch is landed. The girls, on the other hand, are a COMPLETELY different story. When the girls fight, it is literally Thunderdome...Two enter, only one leaves! They simply do not stop...hair gets pulled out by the roots, scratching, punching, kicking...it is really a sight to see.

and girls never get tired.....they can fight all afternoon long if you let 'em.....
i worked at a school in 2000 that had a "cuff" policy.....if you fight you get 10 days vacation, but you get removed from campus by way of sheriff's car......good ol roscoe style....cuffed and stuffed.......your parents had to go to the county office to pick you up.....
of course the policy changed when a board member's son got in a fight.....they changed my write up from a fight to "a confrontational situation"...........

A first fight at our school is an out-of-school suspension for 5 days.
Things have really changed over the years, as others have stated. My dad attended a one-room country school and said that if they got into a fight, they had to stay after school, put on the boxing gloves, and fight it out until one of them couldn't go anymore. He said that always took care of the issue.

We had three fights at our school this year. I happened to break up two of the three.
In both situations the person who threw the first punch was gone for three days the other person went home that day and came back the next.
The third was between my defensive end and the security guy... He won't ever be back at our school which from my perspective is a shame because he was the best athlete we had he was just insane.

You are 100% correct on that.. and 2 of the fights I witnessed this year were girl against boy.. |

The Christian school where I spent the past 7 years (as AD and Dean) had a TOTAL of 3 "real" fights that I recall. I was also the Head FB Coach and I wish we would have had few more! Sometimes our kids were just too nice!  |

I think it is a GREAT opportunity to teach your kids several life lessons : 1) Your actions have consequences, AND these consequences EXTEND BEYOND YOU. 2) Having something to lose should result in a change of behavior/actions. You see this all the time in the actions/work ethic of the demographic you are dealing with. They bounce from minimum wage job to minimum wage job because they have NOTHING to lose. It is a tough situation, because the worlds that are known to these lower SOE kids are either their bleak "nothing to lose" life...OR the fictitious "bling" world they see in the entertainment/pro sports industry. 3) Piggy backing on #2...if you want something, you need to make different choices than someone who doesn't. If you want to go to school, if you want to be a homeowner, if you want to explore other options in life you will have to make different choices than someone who doesn't want those things. AND THOSE CHOICES ARE NOT EASY. (Kind of like the "dark side of the force" LOL) |

I just lost 5 players for a last day of school fight. The AD told me they are up for expulsion and will not be allowed to attend the school next year. I support it. I don't need thugs and hooligans on my team. Especially over the stupid stuff that they were fighting over.

Our school systems policy is an automatic 10 day suspension and no participation in athletics during that time. Inner city school but it is not as much of a problem as you would think.
