This subject was throw in with the $4 gas subject, but I felt it needed to be brought out where more people could see it. A parish (county) here in Louisiana will be going to a 4 day school week by taking Mondays off in order to help ease the pressure of high gas prices. How do you feel that this would be good/bad? I do not know how much of a possibility it will be that my parish will go to it.. but it certainly makes you think about it.. Caldwell Parish to go to 4 day school week

The pros for this, as far as football goes, is if you are given a football/athletics class (6th period, 4th period, whatever) it will be 20% longer. Also, if you have practices/ Wt. Room during mondays you are going to be able to increase the time your players are working.
From a coaching aspect you will have a lot of time monday morning to meet with your staff and implement game plans, go over film, etc. A recent post on here talked about what you do Sundays during the season; well this here would by you a lot of time to prep for the upcoming weeks game.
Now for the BAD: assuming you don't get your boys the final period of the school day, and maybe even if you do, they'll be coming to you drained. An extra 80 minutes or so of being in class can have an adverse effect on some of your boys. Not to mentioin you ain't hitting the practice field until 5 PM at the earliest, and I don't think the boys will be using Monday to do their homework either, so you could see that becoming an issue.
And of course, one extra day of weekend idleness is never good; meaning you may end up having to go early morning on Mondays just to keep the boys out of trouble.

Do not forget that in some districts that do this they may actually not let you do anything with kids on Monday period. I know in my former position that if we had to leave school early due to snow/weather, or if we ran late start (same reason) we were not allowed to have morning workouts or after school practices/workouts either. They are not only trying to save on fuel money for the school, but for the families as well. So that may nix the idea of having a Monday of practice/contact with your team.

Boy that would sure kill our program.. we have 4 games on thursday this year.. could you imagine not seeing your team until Tuesday.. and playing on Thursday 4 times in the year??

Air
I think it will create a "rich get richer" situation should it spread. Schools with support/ (both parental and financial...which usually run together) WILL either not feel any affect, or will actually benefit from the extra day. Schools without much parental or financial support will find it detrimental.

With those schools that still play on Fridays, could you be successful without Monday practices ? To further elaborate on that, the use of online video technology may be the only way of getting "mental reps" on these "off days"
