Guys, I'm running a spread offense (2x2, 3x1 & 5wide) with my youth team this year, utilizing GT Counter Trey, Trap, Veer, Speed Optn, QB Power, Jet series.... and various passing concepts.
Do you guys feel it is necessary to also put in a short yardage package as well? Or, do you think I can run what I have in those situations?
I really like the Belly Dbl Dive series (using a TE), but my concern is that putting in another package might be a bit too much for my kids to absorb. My current offense consists of about 12 plays.
Any thoughts on the subject are appreciated.

No need to add anything else. I will if you are worried about it run wedge from undercenter with jet action or reverse action. What age group is this? Have you run this type of offense before at this level?

I think bpj is running JH's type of offense, morris? JH's teams run a nice wedge from the gun, don't really need to get under center, unless you just want to?

We had an Air Raid team lose the championship game because they needed a yd. They went under center and screwed it up. I know you can run it from the gun but it helps if your QB can go under if needed at times.

I gotcha buddy.....I wasn't trying to be a "know it all", lol....JH sent me a dvd of his running game from the gun, and the "gun wedge" looked like a good "short yardage" play

I would love to get a copy of his offense. The clips I have watched I liked. I honestly do not need a short yd package. In the field they are either going to have to back off some or risk giving up the big play. I think what you need to do is practice a ton of 2 pt conversion type plays. 1-3 yds from the end zone and put pressure on your offense to score in practice. They will get very comfortable and you'll feel more relaxed as a coach as to what to do.

I don't think you need to add any special plays for short yardage but you certainly can get in two TE's with a WB or two and run the same stuff to force the defense to expand its edge and cover more gaps. Really though, I like to expand/contract/shift the formations to mess with fronts (particuliarly the shades) and coverages (rotations vs 2x2, 3x1) rather than just for short yardage. I prefer to stay in our spread look and just run our normal offense. Being able and willing to throw the ball on short yardage is required in order to make them stay out of the box. Sometimes its easier to say than do but in this type of offense (as with any IMO) being one painted into a corner based on situation makes you one dimensional which makes it much tougher to execute. Bpj, once you get up and going let me know how its going for your guys. It can be tough to get them in sync at first, IMO you gotta put your best lineman at center and get a consistant snap in order to have the timing work out. Make sure you over stress the importance of the qb's footwork and EYES on the mesh in veer and GT, critical to get them to eye the key and not peek at the FB....

jhanawa, Many thanks again for the advice! Our practices officially start Friday Aug 1st and I'll be sure to let you know how everything works out. My wife is a pretty good at shooting video, so I plan on posting some clips for all to see throughout the season. Can't wait to get those bobble-heads on the field! Best of luck on your season.

BJP,
I'm doing the exact samething this year with 10-12 yo. If you'd like we can exchange ideas throughout the season. I've already organized the practice schedule for installation along with the drills that we will use the teach it. I will also posting video quite often so as much feedback as possible negative or otherwise will be greatly appreciated!!

We run the spread and have short yarage package. I learned this lesson the hard way. The best thing to do is run your normal offense just go under center with it.
