My name is Joerg Hofmann and I’m a German student and Football Coach. First I have to apologize for my English. I gave my best but it is not my native language
I’m writing this because I would need your help finishing my diploma thesis here in Germany. In my diploma thesis, I compare football playing ability and on field performance related to player constitution and physical characteristics between German and American players at the age of 15 to 19.
I have chosen this topic because I have coached the DB’s on the German national youth team during the Global Junior Championship 2006 in Detroit. We did not win one game but we had some close ones. The question I want to answer is: Are American players faster and stronger than german / European players and if so, what are the reasons for that. Are there any differences in practice methods or organisation? Or is it just the amount of time of practicing that matters?
I hope you will find a way to help me.
I do not need the names of the players but I would need their age, height and weight. I need to know if the player is a starter for your team and what position(s) he plays.
Furthermore I need to know where you did the testing (inside or outside). If outside, what kind of weather was at that day (rainy, windy, hot …). At what surface did the running took place (turf (artificial or grassy), grass, tartan track, wood in a gym…)
Then I would need as many test results as possible of the following athletic tests. That does not mean you have to do these tests. If you have done such tests in the past maybe on a regular basis, I would need the results of the last test or of the last two years. If you want to do these tests, it would be great. But like I said it is not necessary.
Strength tests:
Bench press (1 RM or amount of lifts with 220 lbs.)
Squat (1 RM or amount of lifts with 220 lbs.)
Standing vertical jump (counter movement jump without doing an initial step; feet parallel)
Standing long jump (broad jump)
Straight speed tests:
40y dash
20y dash
10y dash
Change of direction tests:
10y shuttle run (pro agility test; sometimes called: 20y shuttle run)
3 cone test
Endurance tests (one of the two):
Cooper test (12 minutes run measuring the distance the player did cover)
20 meter shuttle (beep test or sometimes called: Multistage Fitness Test). The players run as long as they can between to lines of cones or just lines that are 20 meter apart. A CD-Player is dictating the tempo for the players with a beep signal. The tempo increases during the test. At every beep the players should be changing direction on the cones or lines. If they can’t make it to the cones or lines in time they have to quit and the amount of lanes they ran is counted. I can provide a CD with the signals on it, if needed.
If you have any questions about the tests, feel free to contact me at any time. I have further and detailed information on each test. If you do not know how the tests or one of the tests should be done, feel free to contact me. It is extremely important that the tests are done with the same standards and under same conditions and circumstances to compare the results. Again, you do not have to do these tests because of me. It would be great if you would but I’m more interested in results and things that you are doing on regular basis.
To make sure I can use your test results. Pleas let me know under what circumstances the tests took place.
The last thing I would need to know is how your players practice throughout the year.
