Why do you want to coach? (just to make sure the answer is about the kids) What does loyalty mean to you? On your way from the pressbox an angry parent stops you and yells at you about the terrible game plan. What do you do? You have a 20 minute Indy period, explain how you would use it with "insert position here". What are the most important skills for a "insert position here"? What do you believe a typical work week will look like? (Make sure they don't think it's just about practice and the games). Do you want your players to like you? (I say absolutely yes, although that doesn't mean you are their buddy--you're still the coach)
Those are a few we've used

I like to ask some of these regardless of the position I am filling:
Tell me about your current job? What do you like most? What would you change if you could? Have you been rehired? This line of questioning often reveals some things...
What would your current principal, head coach, AD...tell me about you?
Why us?
How do you believe that football games are won? Philosophies of O, D, Special Teams, Practice Org, etc.
Offseason, Summer Program thoughts...
What do you believe your role is in monitoring the academic progress of your players? How do you accomplish it?
Describe your approach to developing discipline in your program.
How do you deal with players that are involved in other sports/activities?
What is the role of parents within the .... program? Media? Boosters? Administration?
How do you stay current in your field?
How computer literate are you? Do you like to incorporate technology into your classroom/coaching? How?
Do you have a CDL (bus drivers license)?

I always ask them to demonstrate their coaching. I want to hear how they explain a concept, how they break down a drill. The other things listed are certainly important but I also want to find out if they can actually COACH!

Anyone want to share what kind of answers they are looking for in the previous two post? or is there to many variables to have 1 specific answer to these questions? When asked about their current job do they reveal any hint of insubordination, problems that led to them not being rehired,or any other "red flag?" At this point, I have already talked to their current boss(es) so does the person interviewing tell me things dramatically different than I heard from the reference? How do you believe football games are won? Philosophies of O, D, etc.? If you're a 5-wide guy and he believes that you've got to line up in the double wing is it going to work? Just trying to see how compatible the philosophies are from the get-go. How do you stay current in your field? I want to hear that they read books, attend clinics, visit this site religously...are they constantly looking to improve or do they know it all already. How computer literate are you? I'm always looking for people that are more advanced than I am (which isn't hard to be!) in the area of technology. Do they know how to use technology to save time, make our teaching/coaching more interesting to the kids, etc.? I also think that sometimes can give you an insight into their willingness to grow professionally. It's 2008. If they can't copy and paste they better be one hell of a coach! Like Parcells said, if you're still working with a legal pad and the other guy has a laptop... Do you have a CDL? I don't want to be the only one that can get behind the wheel of a bus!

What would your current principal, head coach, AD...tell me about you?
Great classroom teacher / Very hardworking and loyal
Why us?
Looking to be a part of program that believes character / academic / ethical / hard work development leads to athletic success
How do you believe that football games are won? Philosophies of O, D, Special Teams, Practice Org, etc.
Football games are won by the most disciplined team that has worked hard to prepare
I believe in a ground oriented offense that controls the clock and keeps the other teams offense off of the field
On defense stress technique and alignment / proper pursuit angle
Special teams cannot be under estimated. Don't screw them up
Offseason, Summer Program thoughts...
Football is a twelve month sport whether we like it or not. Summer time development is crucial and if not maintained all work during the previous school year will be wasted.
What do you believe your role is in monitoring the academic progress of your players? How do you accomplish it?
Weekly grade checks. I take a proactive approach. Let teachers know that you are interested in the academic success of your players.
Describe your approach to developing discipline in your program.
Firm but fair. Few rules as possible. Do not tolerate breaches of discipline or team rules. Kids WANT boundaries, let them know what they are
How do you deal with players that are involved in other sports/activities?
Athletes that compete in multiple sports are a good thing. After football is over the kid that goes to basketball is getting to practice two more hours a day and compete whereas the kid that does not play is missing out on the cardiac and competitive development.
What is the role of parents within the .... program? Media? Boosters? Administration?
Anyone or anything that supports the athletic program is an asset.
How do you stay current in your field?
Clinics / Coaching school
How computer literate are you? Do you like to incorporate technology into your classroom/coaching? How?
Fair to above average. I take advantage of every possibility possible to incorporate the use or development of technology skills in the classroom or field house.
Do you have a CDL (bus drivers license)? Yes.
