The school I just took over had been in bad shape for a good while.. they finished the season with roughly 35 kids from grades 9-12..
When I arrived on campus in Feb.. we had 72 helmets with only 65 of them in working order..
Well.. today.. we passed out the last helmet we have.. this is next years 10-12 graders.. we still havent taken into account our 20-30+ freshmen who will come over next year..
I dont know what we are going to do.. but I guess its a good problem to have..
I guess I am a heck of a recruiter.. lol

LOL, wait until things start cranking up you'll get a few helmets back but hopefully not nearly enough to take care of your frosh. Is your administration willing to purchase additional equipment? Sometimes they stress increasing the numbers then when you do it they balk at having to purchase equipment to get those kids suited up.

I am in the same boat. Took over the program last season. Before I came we had about 85 kids in the program from 9-12 grades.
At our sign up this week, I have 95 Varsity--50 JV-- 50+ Freshman.
I only have 120 sets of equipment at all! Already been told I am not getting any more.
Any idea how to cut 60+ kids without equipment to try out with?

Coach, Line them up for gassers and stop making them run when you have the same number of kids as you have equipment. If you have a resilient bunch and nobody quits play simon says until you are at the number. With the 60+ kids who don't make it on your team please give them my school's address.
At my new school I had 73 kids sign up for football (they had 30 play last year) and only 50 sets of gear. I'm guessing that out of the 73 signees there will probably around 45 who show up and from them 35 who make it to game one. In my situation the kids aren't used to being required to be at practice or having to work hard so I'm guessing many will drop through the course of the summer. For my first year I would honest rather have 30 kids who are willing to run through hell for me and who are disciplined than having 50 kids who have half of their heart into it. It makes it easier to teach fundamentals and to set a tone for the future because the kids are dedicated.

I guess I am a heck of a recruiter.. lol you can say that again.... getting kids interested is a big step into turning a program around, good luck coach.

Is there a state governing body for football that can help you out with equipment rental until you can buy some? I know here that Football Manitoba has helped programs out by inexpensively renting equipment to teams, but I'm not sure if that is an option where you are.

Great suggestions. I love hard work. To quote Herb Brooks, "I don't need the best players, I need the right ones."
From what I have been told, even if we raise the funds, we aren't allowed to purchase equipment. It has to come from the County funds in order to issue it to the students.

Is there anyway to have the kids "buy their own" equipment?

This is a no-brainer.....the school must make a cut policy OR be liable for any "injuries" that may occur without the proper equipment

Any chance you can borrow gear from another school or program? My youth program has lended equipment to rival programs that were short of gear for a year. We even had the closest HS to us that had a bunch of little guys and had to borrow some shoulder pads one year. They repaid the favor to us when we had a 290 pound kid and no pants or helmet that fit him. Yes one red helmet and we had black helmets
