I was wondering how many of you have to compete with lacrosse for athletes. IN the midwest Lacrosse is a spring sport but I believe out east you guys have it in the fall.
Interesting sport to say the least.

Negative. We don't even compete with soccer anymore.

Luckily for us, Lacross and Soccer do not interfere, and some of my best football players play those sports.

Our lacrosse season in PA is in the spring. Hopefully it will stay that way when it becomes fully sanctioned, because right now, we actually encourage our kids to play.

Lax is a spring sport everywhere I know of in the East. Personally, I think Lax is a GREAT sport LB's & Strong Safety types. Also does wonders for hand eye coordination. cradling a ball and running while avioding being hit is not an easy thing to do. In VA, Lax is big w/ the private schools, but there are some public school programs.

We're in VA, my son is playing his first season this spring. He and several other kids I've coached in football also play on the football team. It's a great sport and a great adjunct to football! They run their butts off so it's a great conditioner, great for eye-hand coordination, seeing the field. There is contact but it's not as intense as football contact. They all love it. FWIW, one of the all time greats in college lacrosse inducted into the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 1983 was a pretty good football player too. Here's the information listed on the hall of fame site: Considered by many to be the greatest to ever play the game of lacrosse, Jim Brown began his lacrosse career at Manhasset High School in New York where his midfield play earned him All-Star honors for three years.
At Syracuse University, Brown's all-around athletic ability became evident, as he lettered in four sports and was voted the school's Athlete of the Year in 1956-57. Brown was a Second Team All-American Selection in 1956, and earned First Team Honors in 1957, finishing second in the nation in scoring his senior year. Many believe his last game was his greatest moment as a lacrosse player, as Brown scored five goals in one-half of play against the nation's top players in the 1957 Collegiate North/South All-Star game.
Brown went on to achieve great success with the Cleveland Browns of the National Football League, and was elected into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1971. Although he is best remembered for his gridiron exploits, Brown is quoted as having said, "I'd rather play lacrosse six days a week and football on the seventh." Can you imagine having to defend against that dude in '56 and '57? Coincidentally the sports writer "Dick" (funny aside: the board software translates the name to Dick if it isn't in quotes) Schapp did as a goalie for Cornell (a perennial power in Lax) and regarded Brown as the greatest Lacrosse player ever. Having observed it and now that I'm beginning to understand it, I'd have to say Lacrosse is a great second sport to Football - when it's played in the Spring. The kids that play it really love it and I'd hate to have to compete with a Lacrosse team for players.

Lacrosse is a Spring sport in FLorida and growing in popularity. I call it football with weapons. I think its great as it takes the focus of the "danger of football" comments away from our sport!

I played both growing up in Maryland where Lax is HUGE and always has been. Lax is a great spring time compliment to football, it is played in the spring everywhere so doesn't compete with football. It's great for cardiovascular conditioning as well as eye hand and eye foot coordination (lots of dodging of people and stx). Much faster paced game than football and anytime they give you a stick and let you hit someone with it, it's got to be a great game!! It is probably the fastest growing sport popularity wise in the country right now. Used to be Maryland, Upstate New York and Long Island, that filled up the college rosters of the big-time lacrosse powers but now you find kids from everywhere playing at those schools. As well as a lot of schools that didn't even play lacrosse getting better and better every year. Notre Dame has been good the last couple of years and I think they only started playing about 8-10 years ago as a varsity sport. More and more states are starting to sanction it so it's only going to get bigger.

LAX is a spring sport in the midwest. I find football players who play lacrosse to have poor tackling and technique. Seems that LAX is played much higher than football is. Too much chest bumping by these players and not running their legs through the tackle.
