I am looking for the best way to Clean Helmets. We peal off the center strips and side logos, but sometimes they leave a sticky area. So what should we use to remove this, that won't hurt the helmets. And what is the best way to remove the scrach markings and paint markings that you get from the contact with the other teams...
Thanks,
Coach Alan

Riddell and Schutt both make "kits" and special products for removing decal residue but they are quite pricey. Otherwise, I've always been told only to use alcohol to clean the outer shell by the manufacturer reps.

Leave the scratches. War wounds! Battle scars! Character!

Have you ever tried Armor All?

Riddell used to make some stuff called "De-glu." I found some from like 1988 (this was about 2003) lying around and used it on our sticky spots. It would completely remove most of them with little liquid and little effort, and even the bad ones just required some extra liquid and elbow grease.

3M Citrus Based Adhesive Remover. Our association has used it for 10 year, we had our helmet company who inspects the helmets check it out for us, he came back with a go ahead. The product does not remove the paint off the helmets if you have had them reconditioned. You can buy the 5oz cans at an office supply store about $5 or order the large can on line for about $14 per can. We use 3 cans a year to clean about 600 helmets a little goes a long way. Buy small cans for the coaches; let them clean them prior to turning in equipment if your association owns the equipment. What ever you use make sure you get the approvel from a helmet conditioning company or the distrubutor.
