I coach 8-9 yr old Mighty Might PW football in Austin, TX and since the end of season last year, we continue to have kids over on Sundays to play football. Most all of the kids are playing hoops at this time, but just can't seem to get football off their minds! Our community is still buzzing because our High School team (Lake Travis) won the TX state, 4A title and it has really fueled the passion within all my kids. Aug can't come soon enough! LOL
BTW, this is a GREAT site! I look forward to being an active member...

Welcome aboard coach. I'm pretty new here, too, but I can attest to the fact that this is a great site. Stick around and read everything that's here in the youth section and above in the "Rules of the Game" section and I'm sure you'll learn a lot. There are a bunch of very knowledgeable coaches here, so soak up what they are willing to share.
Good luck to you and your team.

Why couldn't Lake Travis find a head coach for this year?

Actually, announced today... www.kxan.com/Global/story.asp?S=7827674 "Chad Morris has been named football coach and athletic coordinator at Lake Travis High School. Morris comes to Lake Travis after five years at Stephenville. After missing the playoffs in his first year at Stephenville, the Yellow Jackets made four straight post-season appearances, including a trip to the 4A Division I Semifinal Game in 2005. Prior to coaching at Stephenville, Morris led Bay City High School to four state championship games in five years, including a championship in 2000. Morris replaces Jeff Dicus, who is now head coach at Duncanville High School. Dicus led Lake Travis to the 2007 4A Division I State Championship"

bpj, Hiya! I am also a youth coach in Austin. I coach 9>10yr olds. I have mixed feelings about coaching again next season. I really love the coaching part. It's just dealing with everything else that gets on my nerves.

I can't wait for the '08 season! I finally put together the main formations I want to use. Now all I gotta do is figure out what motions I want, try to put together some packaged routes, figure out if I want to go with series or just plays, and last but not least figure out what plays I want to use. I am thinking about using multiple formations and a few plays. I want to make the defense think when t we shift in and out of different looks.
GO BULLDOGS!

I will Coach 7th grade this year (first year allowed to play in Catholic Middle Schools in our area). In our school, Coaches start with the 7th grade and stay with them and Coach them as 8th graders. Once in 9th, there in HS where 99% of my players will attend the same HS. Thanks to this site, and others, I have ordered some Double Wing videos and will implement the DW system. Before someone ask, our HS runs a spread offense (Texas Tech style) and I already talked to the HC & OC, who both thought it was a great idea. No one runs the DW in our league and it will give me a huge offensive advantage.
If you coach Middle School, attend some of the local Coaching Clinics in your area. I have always been welcomed (I have been to two so far and going to a 3rd in March) and have meet some great Coaches , usually over beer and wings during the social hour.

coach79 - you sound like you're right where I am in preparing the play book for the year! I've put together what I like to call the "Spread-Bone" offense. We basically have 18 plays that are run out of 5 formations and utilize motion on about 25% of them.
The good thing about coaching PW here in Austin, TX is that we keep our teams together year after year. And although they are only 8-9 year olds, I've had my kids for the last 3 years (started in flag). So they are very familiar with each other & the coaches and know what we expect from them.
It's pretty rewarding to see these little guys looking so sharp running a dynamic offense. They can't wait to utilize the new wrinkles this year in live action!

Yeah guys, I've been excited about the '08 season since about a week after the '07 season ended. I coach 12 and 13 year olds in Grayslake, IL. '08 will be my third year as a head coach and my second without have a son in the program.
I just finished a GREAT book called The Football Coaching Bible published by the AFCA. This is available from Human Kinetics (www.humankinetics.com). There is a lot in there that does not necessarily apply to coaching at the youth level but, by and large, I found it really inspiring and helpful.

Last season an all rookie age 7-9 team and a fairly veteran group of 10-11s. The games are always back to back. The vets were easy to coach, BUT holding them accountable to playing to full potential was a bit of a struggle. We use a very modular practice methodology and I have assistants that arent pushy. It helped that I coached most of the older kids 1 year and my system has been very stable for last 8 seasons. Side by side but seperate groups so we could build the same way for both teams, about 1/2 of practice this way. Other 1/2 is team where they are totally seperate. About 2/3 of the coaches with me for 2-3 years now. Either had one team by itself one day each week or started one team later (they leave later) than the other so I could get 30 minutes of uninterrupted team with each team every practice. Will do the same next season, system is fairly easy to put in and coach and we dont waste any time. By petition they said they wouldnt send their kids if I didnt coach the older team too . I will give it a try and see, who knows. Probably a one year deal, will have to say no for once

Had our first football meeting last weekend.
Found out we have 4 Ex University of Nebraska players now coaching my 3 tackle teams along with a 7 year NFL vet, all assistant coaches. Should be a fun year.
