Is he willing to switch up the terminology even somewhat? There's not a lot to learn really. Just seems it hasn't been simplified enough for the kids and yourself....or even the HC I guess.
I also think you are being to hard on yourself. It sounds like you put in the time, and its obvious you have the desire to be a good coach. Sounds like you are reasonable and honest about the situation, I know a lot of people who wouldn't reach out for help. IMO, this isn't as much on you as it is the Head Coach. A good HC would come and help you run drills for a few days. The fact he doesn't seem to care enough is mind boggling to me.

At the college I played for, if you were an injured player, you still dressed in full gear and walked laps during times when they could not use you.
Our injured guys also filmed, snapped balls and such.

My concern is honestly myself. This is my first year as OC. I have helped with this same school for a few years now and have always felt we had the talent. Our DC is great and is more than proven, defense is always good. For the last few years, I have felt like the only thing we were missing was an offense. If we even had a mediocre offense the last 2 seasons we would have been in playoffs, but instead went 5-5 both years.
For these reasons I have put a lot of pressure on myself. I have been busting my butt trying to learn, study, and watch game film from last season. So far this summer we have changed the culture for sure and the kids have really bought into what myself and the rest of the staff are trying to accomplish. If I can get the offensive side of the ball clicking then we will have a good year and have a chance come November.

We do our substituting on offense. Our best 11 are always on the field for defense. As already pointed out, you can be creative and hide the guys on offense. We run shotgun 4 wide for most part. If we are in Ace and running jet right sweep, it really doesn't matter who the outside guy on the left is. Let someone else play there and let your starter rest. Will say this, I'll do all I can to get my best players on the field for 3rd down.

My biggest problem right now is a lack of coaches IMO. The coaches we have all get along great, even when we don't see eye to eye.
We have had good weight room participation for our program and I think we have the necessary talent to be successful. My only concern, is not having enough coaches to coach these guys up the way I would like. I'm big on individual and small groups, but that is hard to do when you lack quality coaches.

We rarely tackle all the way to the ground once season starts. We just go thud and NEVER let our players tackle each other around the legs.
We also have around 35 guys and injuries are always a concern.

I agree with fantom. I think LBs are born. There are just certain instincts required to play the position. It sounds like this kid not only deserves to play somewhere, but if he is the only leader on your team then I would find a place for him. Try fantom's idea and put him on the DL.
