What do you with guys that are a little banged up? They may play friday or possible out a week or so? I hate seeing guys in street clothes throwing footballs around at practice.
Looking for suggestions?

if they are hurt, they should be in the trainers/somewhere else rehabbing or paying attention to the guys that are practicing.
I'm with you. not only are the "zombies" not doing any help by being there, they are a distraction.

If they are just a little dinged up they are dressed in helmet, shorts and practice jersey and following around their position group getting mental reps. We will even have them do any non-contact drills if the trainer approves it.
If they are probably not going to be able to play Friday night we'll give them something to do like filming.

Injured players are expected to attend practice same as always.
With helmets on (unless concussed). "If you can't be a Football player, at least look like one."

We may do this next week when the season begins. Usually we don't have a problem with injured kids as we have them help us with filming practice, carry water, get scout cards, etc. if they are able to do so of course. We also make the kids stand with us coaches so we can quiz them as we are coaching. With a few kids we can actually us them as additional eyes during team. When I was a JV coach I used to get upset with kids just hanging around, talking, and not focusing on practice. One particular practice we had about 10 kids not practicing. I was upset about that in addition to them horsing around on the sideline so I placed each injured player on the sideline 10 yards away from each other. This stopped their talking pretty quick. Funny enough, 8 of the 10 were OK to practice the next day.

We want them at practice paying attention. If they need to see the trainers or go to rehab that's acceptable. But if not they need to be at practice.

A buddy of mine is our S&C guy. When he's not in SoCal going to school for physical therapy, he's at our practices. If a kid is injured, he works out with our guy on the field or in the weight room. He finds ways for them to lift around their injury and then does rehab work with them. After a full day of seated weight sled pulls, core work, weights, etc. kids tend to make miraculous recoveries.

I don't understand kids who exaggerate injuries to stay out of practice. We didn't ask you to play! If you don't want to play, just leave.

Stole this from the Dennis Greehan Delaware Wing T book. We give the "banked up" players a crash course on snapping the football, then use them all day long with the QB's. They actually become useful in this way and suddenly being "dinged up" becomes less cool.

At the college I played for, if you were an injured player, you still dressed in full gear and walked laps during times when they could not use you.
Our injured guys also filmed, snapped balls and such.

Looking for suggestions? This, for me, depends on the severity of the injury and which player it is. If it is something the player can walk around with, just not play with, and rehab will not change that, he is at practice listening and learning. If he needs rehab, rehab.

Injured guys still dress in full pads for practice. Our trainer works them out the entire practice and they seem to tend to recover quickly.

I always heard Bobby Bowden would have a leg injury guy do crunches for hours on end. Upper body injury had to ride a stationary bike for hours. No one was "hurt" for long.

This year we implemented an injured workout particularly for those who like to milk small injuries. There is a list of exercises if you have an upper body injury and a list of exercises/running if you have a lower body injury. Both are 600 total reps so it will take a good hour to complete. One kid started it last week and within 5 minutes asked if he could rejoin practice and give it a go, hasn't had a problem since.

I like the idea and would like to implement something like it.

Who is counting to make sure they do all that?
Especially if it's more than one player?

We have a manager who is in charge of counting for them and does a pretty good job, so far we haven't had more than one so it could get tough with several, but hopefully it deters us from having too many. We have also talked about that if someone has a legit injury and would be better served completing rehab type work with our trainer then we will obviously do that. This is meant more for the hurt rather than injured types.
