Its tough to play everyone when you have freshmen on the jv level, we have no freshmen team. Most have not played football at all and cannot matchup against soph. We emphasize that practice will determine playing time. We are trying to develope an attitude of teaching and competition daily. We play most if not all kids in every game. Game time is based on practice performance. If we are not competitive in a game coaches will decide which series will be freshmen time. We try to develope the core group of freshmen for the next year by allowing them to bond in the huddle.

We try to create an exciting atmosphere for a game. We want our stands packed and fans rowdy for the game. We have tried to get our band and cheer leaders involved in gameday traditions but they feel that they are going to prepare for their own competitions and that their time slot at our game is guarantied. I tried to fire the cheer leaders but, that didn't go over to well.
I found this info on the USC website. I like how the band has its own tradition and is also tied into the traditions of football. Other Songs 'Tribute To Troy,' the incessant stanza of pounding drums and blaring horns, is played after every defensive stop. 'Fanfare' is the introduction to 'Tribute To Troy' and is played when the band takes the field. 'All Right Now' is played after USC gets a turnover. 'Another One Bites the Dust' is played after USC gets a sack. The 'William Tell Overture' is played at the start of the fourth quarter. "The Emperor's Theme" from Star Wars is played when USC is flagged for a major penalty.

Coach K, I feel your pain. I took last year off to support wife and work extra while she stayed home. It killed me. I love the game and missed the daily interaction with the kids. I am back coaching but have made it clear to the head coach that I cant spend infinite hours watching film and bsing. I drove my wife crazy last season and my wife realized that football was more than a game for me. I am one of the few coaches in america that sprints off the field to get to daycare when its my turn. I wished I would have taken on a limited role last year, like a pressbox coach or create scouting reports. I suggest not going cold turkey

I deal with this same topic every year coaching freshmen football. 1. start with fundamentals. Tackling and Blocking. Everybody learns to do this no matter what position. 2. Watch a lot of film. High school and college is the best teaching tools. This will be a realistic speed and skill level for your team. If you can film the team period of your practice and watch it as a team on non practice days. 3. Teach your system in small parts at the position level. Players need to master the skills that they will use on a given play. Team period is for fine tuning the play not teaching. Demand perfection. With limited practice time you should look for an offense that is simple but appears complex. A few play with a lot of formations. This gives you the ability to move defenses around, and gives your players the confidence in what they are doing. This allows for greater speed and aggression without mistakes.
good luck and keep us yanks informed on your season.

1) A.D. does not figure rush hour traffic into ordering busses. Kickoff team went from bus to field while the rest of the team stretched. 2) A.D. gets time right, but gives wrong map to the bus driver. Luckily one of our kids grandparents lived in the area and could give the bus driver dirrections to the stadium. We ended up sending the kickoff team onto the field from the bus.

I have been on the lossing end of the mercy rule. League alignments gave us a team for a preseason game that we had no chance at beating. We prepared like any other game. They smashed us like expected. Running clock in the second half shortened the game and we got very few chances to run our offence. It was a wasted week. We practiced for an ass kicking and then didnt get any gametime out of it. I used my timeouts to stop the clock and the refs got mad. We were being dominated by a superior team, which was a great chance for my kids to get better.

brophy, When you say primary and secondary positions, Do you mean an offensive position and a defensive position? How many kids do you average on the freshmen level?

Make a wish foundation Allow a young kid the chance to be apart of a football team. Most of the time they come and hang out at a practice plus get some attention at a game. Only downside is that most of the kids illnesses are fatal. that is tough on highschool kids.
They also may want you and your kids to work a fundraiser.

5 stadiums for every tardy 10 stadiums for any cut
We do these after practice on mondays. They have become so effective it takes a couple of weeks to get enough kids to make a point. We will try to grab the parent and talk to them as the kid runs. It great to see a soccer mom make sure her son finishes the drill.
