I'm in PA close to Ohio and know their playoff points system. Beating a bad team doesn't do much but it's better than not playing a game I guess. Alot of the private school in Ohio near us play independent schedules so getting games isn't always easy too. But they didn't play a game. OHSAA isn't even calling it a contest and it doesn't count towards anything. Again, how does a school with that reputation get duped? This is more shocking than ESPN or IMG getting fleeced. Someone a couple counties away doesn't know a school is not accredited? You'd think your AD in PA would know if a school close by was actually a real school. That's my only point. Had no idea the game wasn't being counted. Saying that I can see how teams would schedule them in a way to get an easy win and fill out a schedule when no one wants to play you.

At the upper echelon of HS football it has become a business sadly. Just like any other entity as the money started flowing people started trying to get their piece of the pie. We'll see more and more of these places begin to pop up as the money becomes more and more.
From many threads on here and just looking around our state I fear in many places football is transforming into a big school only sport. The heart and soul of high school football, the smaller places that usually have 30-40-50 kids on the team are struggling. Won't be long till we see lots of co-ops or just the bigger schools able to field teams.

Not sure those schools are getting duped, probably looking for easy wins. ESPN pushed them as a team with tons of D1 players etc on a national broadcast. Other schools on their schedule surely have a hard time finding indy games and grab them as an easy win. Doubt they care about stars and commits they just want a win. I'd agree in many cases but in Ohio they most definitely care about if the opponent will win too. AH went and played #1 Team in NJ the next week. Their playoff system rewards playing good teams. That's why it doesn't make sense. Bishop Syc was like 0-6 the year before. I'm in PA close to Ohio and know their playoff points system. Beating a bad team doesn't do much but it's better than not playing a game I guess. Alot of the private school in Ohio near us play independent schedules so getting games isn't always easy too.

As with most things money has ruined sports in many places like this. I get it but also don't get it how half way through a season a kid transfers in and you just throw them in there as your starter. But when you throw in the pressure to win and money that is infiltrating big high school football it's clear. Just sad to see how some places operate.
Probst is another story all together. Amazing how much he talks about himself to the team in that show. Just a true piece of garbage over all.

Just had our game Friday cancelled due to one case on the other team. Only week two and there have been multiple games cancelled already due to corona. One team went away to camp for a week and shocking has had both their games cancelled already. Didn't have any last year and played our full shortened schedule of 7 games. We had 10 scheduled this year but feel like the over under for actual games is 5 this year.
Anyone else getting hit already with cancellations?

Yup played Friday against a 2A team (second smallest in PA) and LOST then IMG on Sunday. If they keep this squad going I saw they play in Kentucky, Texas, Ohio, Maryland, Ct, Maryland and VA. How are they gonna get to all those games???

We have had some games moved to Thrs and Sat this year due to lack of officials in the area. Not sure it's NFHS or our state but they have implemented a rule that basically says from the time the refs step foot on the property till the time they leave they are protected and any player coach or fan who confronts them or harasses them can be punished by a two game suspension. Sadly like those stupid warning labels on bleach and stuff that say "do not drink" they had to put this in place for a reason

Thanks guys. I hate them and all but like I said the AD ordered them for some reason and the HC wants to give them out since we have them and the kids know about them. AD is young and new also trying to climb the ladder. I finished up my admin papers recently and he was in some of my classes I remembered. Said something to him one day about our internship group and he replied "Yeah I won all the awards for those." So that's the mind set we are dealing with as far as he goes.... God help you. The good thing is I don't teach where I coach so I don't take him too serious at all. I also won awards and let him know that to knock him down a bit.

I'm about as crusty as humanly possible, but hating stickers is taking it to a new level. Its just the whole process of them and all. It just seems like it's one of those things that seems cool at the start of the year but then by week 7 you're like f**k these things....

Think this is what we are going with:
TEAM (everyone gets sticker) win, shut out, 28 or more scored, no penalties, no turnovers, 100 yard rusher-receiver-passer
INDIVIDUAL character award of the week, hit of the week, take away (int, fumble, blocked kick...) sack, TD
and anything deemed worth by coaching staff.
Should be easy to figure those out each week and being a small team won't be that hard to hand out. Also being a small and young team might not need to hand out that many any ways....

Have the AC's give them out to their kids. Could be game awards or even practice awards. They are in a better position to select for their own guys. We are a small team about 28 right now so all the coaches are around all the kids all the time. Like the idea of position coaches handing them out though. I hate these things cause someone has to track all the BS and stats etc that go with them. Gonna try and keep it as simple as possible with very easy goals.

So our AD ordered award stickers for the helmets this year. I hate them but looks like we will be giving them out weekly. Too lazy to search...anyone have a list/criteria they use to hand them out each week?

As we talk about numbers decreasing in another thread we have the physical punishment thread going on and coaches talking about how making a kid puke is a good reminder not to break a rule....

Stumbled in here looking for some fresh ideas. Here is what we do: 1/ Boards. We take the boy(s) to the baseball field with a 2x4 and we make them push it from foul line to foul like right on the lip of the warning track grass. The 2x4 doesn’t slide well at all. There is a technique to pushing it but that is something you will need to figure out on your own. 2/ Plate pushes. Grab at 45 pound plate and have the kid push it from goal line to goal like. It’s great for the quads. 3/ Log Rolls. Kids heave learned how to cheat these over the years so I will offer up a few pointers. Have them cross their feet and extend their arms over their heads while locking fingers. Puts a lot of emphasis to on the core. If a kid is really bad just have them do a couple of sprints while mixing in a few exercises where their center of gravity shifts (i.e., burpees, up-downs, sky highs, etc.). This is guarantee to deliver some puke, which is a good reminder. Coaches: WHY CANT WE GET KIDS TO PLAY!!!!!!!!!!!! Also Coaches: DO LOG ROLLS TILL YOU PUKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THAT WILL TEACH YOU NOT TO TALK IN A DRILL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

blb brings up a good point. Our small school had 130-140 graduating 30 years ago-even 20. This year there were 80. PLUS soccer was added 9 years ago so now there are 4 or really 5 sports. Too many for a small school. If you assume 1/2 are girls and 1/2 will not do a sport and half of them will do another sport you end up with @ 10 available each grade unless you can get the do nothings to play. I think the school graduated 60 where we are now. And offers Football, Soccer, Golf, Cross Country, Band all in the fall oh and they started some kind of E Sports team as well..... Just saw a post that said PA had 586 teams 10 years ago. This season there are 556.

How big is your school? I don't think the game will die, it's just changing where it will be able to be played. We have a lot of hockey in our city, big facility with two rinks just opened and we are like 2 hours from Canadian border so there are a lot of hockey people around. I say that because people say this myth about the Canadian farm boys playing on frozen rinks and making it to the NHL is dead. The amount of money it takes to play hockey now is absurd! Equipment, ice time, team fees, skating coaching, shooting coach, travel, etc.... They say if Wayne Gretzky was a kid in this era with the same family background he came from he probably never would have made it because thy couldn't afford it! Now I don't think money will kill football in a direct way but with in a decade it's going to be a big school sport. Most small schools are in areas where people struggle because there is a smaller population and lack of jobs. Kids are forced to do more to help or do not have the support at home that pushes them to play. And people have said it's a hard game, it is. With so much other things going on now and the time commitment it takes to play now I can see why the marginal kids are like "ehhhhh f' this" leaving just your truly dedicated players and then not much else behind them. That's the big issue it's not your true number, it's how many you can put on the field and not close your eyes or pray for their safety!!! Maybe I'm rambling but as someone who has coached in smaller school for quite awhile now there is no doubt the game is in trouble at small schools, we just had two traditional powers have to co-op a week ago to survive. Now lets add in how hard it is to get coaches any more...hey man want to coach? Okay here do this 6 hour course on coaching theory, another on concussions, cardiac, and covid, alos get these clearances for 100.00, and we need 50 bucks for a polo cause the school doesn't pay for that. Oh and you can split a 1000.00 JV check..... If anyone made it this far sorry for the rant but small school football is in trouble. we are ~350 pop and have 70 in the football program. youth program has about 50 in it from 6th - 8th grade. the game has to be taught, and thought different. Good to hear. Those are great numbers for a school that size

We are actually going to be worse than spring. I'll be lucky to get 25 on varsity. What Realdawg and Wingtol have mentioned about quality backups is exactly our problem. We may have 12-14 real players then an embarrassing drop off. "We go from the A's to the Z's real quick!!!"

Here in my part of Virginia (smallest classification) turnout is really low. We had only 6 teams in our region play this past spring. One school has already canned its season because of low numbers. Two of the more successful programs have 30 and 22 out. I hear in the situation is about the same in the wester part of the state for the small schools. sadly it is a dying game too physical for mommies too manly for snowflakes the nwo infiltration has killed this country from within by killing football prove me wrong..... We are a small school in Western PA and are struggling to hit 30 this year. There are many factors including a decline in population in our area, the school offering football soccer band cross country and golf all in the fall at a school that graduated like 60 kids last year. What we seem to be missing is that middle group of kids who are the backbone of your team, the back-ups and scout kids who want to be part of something. Our kids are still pretty tough and work hard I feel we have become a society of instant gratification and kids aren't willing to work their way up. I'm not playing, I'm out!!! That's the mentality that is hurting places. I also think the game has been under attack in the media and that doesn't help. Let's not even start on the "You'll get a full ride if you play this sport year round and nothing else" travel and club aspect of other sports. I really feel that football is going to become a big school sport and many of the smaller classes will struggle to find teams. Small school ball which I think is the heart and soul of the game will become a thing of the past soon with just the giant schools playing.

One of the benefits of just hitting 30 players on the team, with 13 who you feel comfortable will not die in a varsity game, no need for depth chart! If you aren't getting playing time for us well.....that's your problem!

Pictures have always been during practice at every school I've coached at. If we don't win a game because we lost that half hour of practice, then we should look at how we practice. Pictures in all of the schools that I have worked at in the South have picture taking like I wouldn’t believe. In the north it was always. Quick team picture, if you want individual pictures get in that line and if not get changed and let’s go. In the South…team picture in gym, team picture in bleachers, players individual pictures, player pictures with family, coaches picture for family, position group pictures, staff picture, grade level group picture, football + cheerleading, senior football + senior football, and finally all fall sports at once in the bleachers. Plus or minus a pose or two depending on local preference. It’s nonsense. I’ve been married 18 years and my wife has only suckered into three formal family pictures. I have never understood the coaches families pictures in HS. Now when the colleges use to send out the big media guides it was always nice to check out any hot wives in the family pictures but anyways....

How many of you guys have classifications based on male enrollment? PA numbers are done separately for boys and girls. So our number was like 132 last cycle. That’s boys 9-11 enrolled at a certain date, usually April some time, before the new two year cycle starts.

Used to coach against a school that only had stands on one side of their homefield; because on the opposite side of the field, less than 15 yards away from the sideline was an active train track. There was a fence between the tracks and the field, but there was only enough room on that sideline for the home team. About 2 or 3 times a game a train would go barreling by. Also, the back corner of one of the endzones dropped off about 4 feet for some reason, I saw a kid run a fade route there, and just disappear. Adds a new meaning to the term "trainwreck" when you have a bad game 😄 Power house private school in town built and amazing athletic facility in the city on old industrial sites. Active train tracks behind visitors as well. Never realized how many trains go through our city until my kids had a track practice there. Also the he field in State College Pa sits below street level, kind of like the Big House, had scout film from them of a game during huge rain storm. Water eventually made its way almost to the hashes when they called the game because they were afraid someone could drown on the bottom of a pile. So don’t build your stadium below street level.

I am still stuck on Marino for a buck. If Dan is letting it rip in todays NFL this cap hit could be the best value ever in the history of sports!!!!!!! I unpopulary maintain he is the greatest QB of all time. I’m spending my money on OL/DL……anyone looks like hall of gamer running behind Pace, Munoz, Allen, Mawae, and Shaq Mason (could’ve gone several different ways on the last OG (ex. Grimm or Faneca), but I wanted to take a moment to highlight that Mason was the true MVP of super bowl 53) As a Western PA boy myself and life long Dolphins fan I agree 100% with your Marino take
