I can't believe some of the stuff that I'm reading. IT'S PHUKIN' HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL. Sure, it's good to teach a work ethic but they're kids. Football shouldn't take their and their family's lives over. Coaches have families and lives. No wonder I retired. Agreed wholeheartedly. I did 6-7 hours a week as a HC and I felt like that was too much. About what we did for on the field stuff. 3x's a week for 2 hours or less. Weight room was open an hour before if they wanted to lift. Did that for July and usually first week in Aug. Week off before official start date which has now become "heat acclimization" week where the state mandates you do a week in helmets before going full pads the next week. Those are the only two weeks you get now for pre-season in PA with one scrimmage. I am all for less is more but the one scrimmage makes it hard to get ready for a season if you ask me.

Run a normal practice basically. Basically like NFL OTAs. It was always changing with our state association but we could wear helmets. Some years we were allowed shoulder pads as well. Could hit bags most years, some years there were stipulations with "contact" not that we ever approached anything close to full contact in summer work outs.

Our summer scheduled use to be M, T, TH 4-5 Lift 5-7 on field starting July. Wasn't too bad. We didn't do any 7-7 tournaments or that non-sense. We might have had a like minded school to do a 7-7 with during our normal schedule. Pretty common for most schools around here to do the same. Some of course more and some less.

Lots of factors could be in play. To be honest most unsolicited emails you send probably don't get read. I always looked to see if it was from a school account or personal account too. If nomercyspread@hotmail sent me an email it most likely wasnt getting checked. Now if TSmith@school.org sent one then it seemed more legit. Thats just me though.

Dumb rule. Like someone else said we can be our own worst enemies sometimes. If I read the article correctly these guys played on the state title team last year, finished the year, were injured and came back too (2022). But they are not playing next season (2023) so the coach said no ring cause you "quit".....thats the dumbest chit ever!!
Did I miss something? Like they got rings just not at the team ceremony? Or they were mailed to them or something?

When I first started out that staff would have marathon meetings on Sundays like 12+ hours. I was single and didn't care at the time so wasn't a big deal. I would say about 2 hours of that was actual football time and think some of the other coaches just wanted to get out of the house. I will say I did learn a ton of football back then, not sure it was from the meetings or just paying attention and trying to make my self better. This was also back in the days of VHS and in person film exchanges so that did make things take a bit longer.
After I left there in '05 and started with the only other HC I have worked for we did meet on weekends to start but again this was mimi-DV and dvd days so film was still more based at the football office. We also ran the same O and basically the same D till our last team in '21. Knowing those systems inside and out made game planning a lot easier, we didn't necessarily game plan for other teams ourselves but became more of what are they going to do vs us (if that makes sense).
I did learn a TON of football in meetings, hand drawing scout cards and packets was invaluable to me as a young guy. But now not so much. Give me the film and let me see what they are doing, not to sound arrogant but there isn't much I haven't seen and can't ID quickly on film as many veteran coaches probably can too. And finally as football has become much more generic over the years scheme wise it becomes more of who are their dudes and how do they use them over how do they line up.

Lou holtz was the man! Why is Rush so successful? My quick synopsis? 1. He knows football. 2. Winning is the the primary driver of his conscience. Wasn't he paying kids to come play for him as well? I'm guessing that can help make someone successful wherever they end up...

There are like zero regulations for travel;/clubs now. Need clearances to coach? Ehh maybe. Need to take all the NFHS "trainings" each year? Nawww. Adhere to time constraints on practices/games each week? No way Eligibility checks? More like did the check clear. Play all year round with no off-season/time to strength train or recover? Of course!
Just a few great examples of why we need regulated sports in educational settings still in this country. I hope to God it never goes to a club system. Leaves way too many gray areas and cuts back on kids ability to be, just kids playing a sport.

I think we are on the verge of special education laws being appeased by having all teachers take some mandatory training sessions to be certified in special education services instead of trying to train and incentivize hiring to get enough qualified candidates. Everyone will be worse off but it will look good on paper to lawmakers. It’s purely speculation but I just don’t see any other way for the compliance of laws for delivery accommodations will be met. When I first started teaching, I could count my SpEd students on one hand. And they were SpEd for something like dyslexia, which is a real thing. Now, I have dozens of kids with IEPs and 504 plans. And, by a large margin, they are mostly for behavior issues. Parents really push hard to get an IEP or 504 for their kid. I don't get it. I don't understand why a parent would want their kid labeled. When my youngest was in grade school, a teacher thought he was ADHD. Told my wife and I that he needed to be medicated and wanted him evaluated for SpEd. We said no. Our argument was that he needs to figure it out. We told her that if he was being a dope in the classroom and wasn't doing his work, she should contact us and we would handle it on our end. And you know what? He figured it out. He had an Associate's in Engineering before he graduated high school and is now about halfway through the US Navy nuke program down in South Carolina. I have to wonder if things would have been different if we had crippled him with an IEP. For a lot of parents, it's like some weird contest to have the most messed up kid. It used to be that the kids who were celebrated were the ones who had some special skill or ability. They were really smart. They were great at sports. They were good artists or musicians. But they had something special about them that they worked at and they excelled. Now, it seems that if you have a kid who is just average, that's not good enough for parents. They have to come up with something to make the kid "exceptional" even if it is something bad. We have kids in our school with ridiculous accommodations. They can take breaks whenever they want. They can leave class and go down to the gym to shoot hoops. They have an aid who writes for them. They get candy or prizes at the end of the day if they actually manage to trip over the hilariously low bar for their daily behavior goal. They are exempt from doing work or having consequences for misbehavior. Eligibility usually gets waived if they are out for sports. Those kids and their parents run the school and they know it. I used to take solace in the fact that the real world is going to come for those kids fast. And they are going to end up in some dead-end job or living with Mom and Dad because they can't function in the real world without all the propping up to which they have become accustomed. But, even that might be ending. And when these kids can't function in the adult world, it might end up being our fault anyway (LINK). Since I have moved the dark side and became an AP I can say SpEd has become an out of control monster that no one has any clue what to do with. My district is way stricter on discipline of SpEd students around even though we have the most, shall we say at risk population in our county. We had a huge problem with kid wandering the halls last year, which is a whole other post about policy and discipline etc that I'm not going into, we would try and clear them out or move them along and kids would say "I got an IEP what are you gonna do!" and sadly they were right. We joke that when being an a**hole becomes a "disability" it's over for education. And we are closer than people think...

What are the benefits you see from the box? The usual answers are about seeing things better and keeping emotion out of decision making...anything beyond that? wingtol same question That's kinda like asking, "Besides that she's hot and rich what do you like about her?" Yeah no chit....besides a clam atmosphere where you can make rational decisions based on a view no one else has what are the beneftis? Well I can chew all I want and swear at the officials without fear of repercussion.

Went to the booth long ago as the OL/DC and was in the HC ear on O all the time. Don't think I could ever call a game on the sidelines again. After many years on the sideline the boss wanted me up in the booth for my last few. After the 1st game calling a game from up there my first thought was, "Holy chit it's so much easier up here." You mean I can actually see where they are lined up from the box and not have to take the word of a 16 year old kid or some coach in the box who doesn't know a 3 tech from a triple cheeseburger? Deal.

I thought I understood how/why a kid earns "stars" I guess I don't. We have a kid that Miami, Texas AM, Virginia Tech and others have offered. Kid has 0 stars or a rank on 247... If they are real offers then he will soon. If they are "Hey heres an offer but before we really offer come to our camp..." then he wont. Think alot of those sites just ride the coat tails of others and point out the obvious when giving out stars and there is pressure to give out stars when a kid gets looks from colleges to boost that colleges profile up. You don't think the "regional scouts" don't have ties to the schools?

There are all kinds of good things popping up on twitter for recruiting. The calendars with the contact periods for all different levels, what each level can offer, the odds of playing in college etc.
Not that we were pumping out prospects all that time but I would always give a little college football talk during our HC parents meeting. I was always honest and said it is very hard to play in college then would give out the average ht and wt of players at some of the local D2 schools to drive home that point. I think you have to be honest with people about college recruiting and what goes along with it. Especially now days with all the offer chasing and services and stars etc..

PA rules about NIL:
But the PIAA’s NIL rule has many stipulations. For example, it must not be used “as an incentive for enrollment decisions or membership on a team.” Also, no school, coach, booster clubs, collectives, administrators or alumni may arrange or pay for a student’s NIL deal. And a student is not permitted to use a PIAA school, team name, nicknames or logos in their NIL deals. A student also can’t promote anything endorsing adult entertainment products, alcohol products, casinos or gambling operations, tobacco or electronic smoking products, prescription pharmaceuticals or weapons, firearms and ammunition.
So seems like they are saying sure you can have NIL but then also being like yeah well about those NILs.... Already had some moron coach on FB posting about getting deals for his kids and brokering them, until several people pointed out that was illegal according to these guidelines. Shocking the post disappeared quickly.

PA approved theirs this week. Almost immediately an area coach who has the most massive ego ever, I would say is a border line true narcissist, that played pro ball posted on FB he was looking to broker deals for his kids. Within minutes someone posted the regulations for the state saying how it is a violation for a coach to solicit NIL for players. Then this guy complained and moaned how he was the victim somehow when people came at him.
So it's off to a great start in PA!!!!!!!

What's wrong with just saying "Run it again"? BUT THE SCRIPT!!!!! We never scripted team, just had like 30 mins or so and would run our stuff against what the scout team threw at us. Was good for us since we never knew what D would be seen on Fridays. Also would go over a play and run it again if there were mistakes. Fix it on the field. Wasn't right? Run it again! Same with the D, I would hand the scout coach the cards and say give us a lot of run or whatever. Felt it made us better as coaches when you were thinking and adjusting and coaching it all up.

Things that MS programs have to do:
Keep kids in the program/involved with the game Teach fundamentals well (block/tackle being most important)
After that maybe some scheme or terminology.
I guess in an ideal world they would do everything the same as the HS teams. But as always things change year to year, new systems are installed, coaches change, etc.
You can invest a few years at that level then BOOM! HS changes system, new HC comes in, new OC/DC that's why you focus on keeping kids in the program and teaching them the fundamentals. Do that and you will be successful

The Wing-T is dead. No one runs it. Go spread. It's your only hope to win... What about the Spread-Gun-Wing-T-Air-Raid-Totallynotfacemelter? It's a great O, you can learn everything and install it just after one 45 minute clinic session. That's the best way to do it. Highly recommend.
