blackknight, you're right. There have been times when we have named something then had to explain to the kids who/what he/it was (in order to make the connection). I guess you just have to think of it as teaching your players cultural literacy. It gets more difficult as one becomes chronologically challenged, as I am.

Custodial staff takes care of field set up (down markers, chains etc, moving soccer & LAX nets). We (coaches) take care of anything we need on sideline (tables for water, phones, kicking net). AD and assistant AD take care of people working security, police and ticket takers. Concession stand was operated by booster club, but not now. The senior class runs the concession stand.

"1)Do Right-be where you are supposed to be, doing what you are supposed to be doing, when you are supposed to be doing it. 2) Never do anything to embarrass yourself, your family, your team, your school or your community. " These are the two ideas we talk about all the time. The third thing we stress is communication, especially when you're not where you're supposed to be or not on time...

We follow the same philosophy as silkyice.... Because we watch film with players on Saturday (when we're allowed), we have a real practice on Monday, even though there is a JV game. Practice is in helmets and shoulder pads and focuses on fundamentals (blocking, tackling, special teams skills).

"...some of the clinics I've been in is to go back and retype/organize my notes after initially listening to them. It's been very helpful in the past though it takes some time" My roommate in college got me to do this. It's probably what got me through college. I, too, take clinic/video notes then go back and recopy them. Yea, it takes some time, but it beats watching the masked singer/dancer crap.

Here's my two cents....Let me start by saying it helps if you go to a school where you know one of the coaches or the school is recruiting one of your players. Yea, I know they all say come visit, but it doesn't always work that way. Went to one place and was treated like a leper; it ended up being a wasted trip. When we visited colleges B.P. (Before Pandemic), we would go any time in of February (after signing date)to mid March(before Spring practice). Keep in mind that some schools start spring drill much earlier than others; so check before trying to set-up a visit. Also, it's a good idea to have a written list of specific questions you want answered so that you don't end up asking to be taught the entire defense in one meeting.

Been coaching 48 years. Never got a bonus for winning state title, never got extra pay for extended season (play-offs), and never got extra pay when we opened early. In my area, coaching salaries are part of the teaching contract that the teacher union negotiates.

We have a league scheduling committee comprised of athletic directors, some who do not know if a football is inflated or filled with rocks....

I am not a big guy and not concerned about fashion. I wear hiking shoes (Oboz or Merrell) with Gortex liner. They give great support, they're comfy, and they are waterproof. These shoes are a bit pricey, but they are worth every penny. I wear these all the time, and they usually last at least a year.

"I like the "tool box" analogy... You want enough tools to be able to do the job needed. But if you have too many then you can't even carry the tool box." Or you have so many tools that you can't find the one you need when you need it.

Isn't using "rational thought" in the same sentence with administrators an oxymoron? ?

I use power point and create my ow stuff because I am a technological dinosaur. I create a slide template, then simply copy and paste it onto another slide. Once you draw a formation, you can group it so that when you copy/paste it, you do not have to re-draw the entire thing. It will copy/paste the "group" that you made.

I just finished doing a bunch of stuff on PowerPoint. Being able to group things and copy an entire slide (in one easy click) made life easy for me.

"...those kids never panned out, and there was a reason they weren't playing, and most of that was they didn't dig the contact and certainly were not into the hard work to be good at something." They ended up being nothing but problems; problems that often took time away from coaching the ones who wanted to be there. So now, if I talk to a kid about playing football, and he hems and haws about it; I move on.

Our game jerseys usually hold up well, but we will replace really beat-up jerseys every year. One thing that helps us giving graduating seniors their game jerseys. All seniors get the same jersey (home or away). So we end up replacing different jerseys every year.

"I still will scout a team in person if the schedule permits. There's just something about seeing a team live that I like..." We do the same thing. In fact, we bring along young guys (if their wives let them out) so that they might learn some football....

Back in the day when coaches actually went to games and scouted with pencil and paper, there was only one team who had lights and played Friday nights. All the coaches who were scouting sat in one corner of the stands. It was a combination clinic, social hour, therapy session, and scout. It was great. I learned a great deal of football and got to meet/know some great coaches.

I stand corrected. What I was referring to was scouting a game via a human recording everything on paper (as in Football Scouting Methods).

We might have to go back to sending young coaches out to video games or make film exchanges in a Dunkin Donuts parking lot. We might even have to return to going to games and scouting with pencil and paper (a la Belichick"padding").

We spend 15-20 minutes a day on two aspects of special teams Monday and Tuesday. Most of this time is spent on individual skills. Wednesday is the day we spend more time on the team aspect.

Defensively we always seemed to run into people who would drastically change their offense the week we played them." We get the same thing. Agree with 44dlcoach in that is might work for a series or 2.

We focus on defending the 5 most used formations based on # of times used. If formations 6, 7 and 8 are used a few times less than the top 5, we will show them to the defense at the end of team on Wednesday, as well as what to call and how to align. For the most part, we will probably be in Base vs these formations and/or run a simple stunt. I believe that "you can't put a tarp over the entire ocean." So we focus on what an opponent does the most. If the opponent does something different, then he is not doing what he does best.

"... you have to adjust to every formation you see. It doesn't matter what you signal in, they have to adjust it on the field to the formation. The more formations you see the harder it gets and the less calls you can have..." I agree 100%. Defense has to prepare for everything seen on film (not to mention shifts, trades, motion) PLUS be able to adjust to any trick/crazy formation that they haven't shown on film.

Sorry if this is a long response. Hopefully, it will at least give you some food for thought. I started applying for HC positions when I was a young buck who was just a position coach. I was a DC at a big, successful school and only applied for HC jobs at smaller schools because I thought a small school would be a good place to start; I could work my way up to a bigger school. IMHO, the three most important things to look for in a coordinator/assistant are loyalty, work ethic, and willingness to learn. If an assistant has these three traits, the rest will take care of itself. When I interviewed, I took a binder that contained the following items. COACHING EXPERIENCE, OVERVIEW, PHILOSOPHY, WHAT I EXPECT FROM AN ASSISTANT COACH, WHAT ASSISTANT COACHES CAN EXPECT FROM ME, HEAD COACH RESPONSIBILITIES, VARSITY ASSISTANT RESPONSIBILITIES, FRESHMAN COACH RESPONSIBILITIES, WEEKLY PRACTICE BREAKDOWN, WHAT I EXPECT FROM PLAYERS, TEAM RULES, COMMUNITY RELATIONS, COACHING REFERENCES Looking back (hindsight is always 20/20) the two biggest mistakes I made were: #1-Not having a clue who would coach with me if I got the job. I got the job in middle of summer and had to really scramble to get assistants. Ended up having to take guys who had VERY limited football background. I had teach them everything on the run. Because these guys were not football guys(a few not even in the building), I ended up doing everything during the off season(very stressful). #2-Not understanding that it would take time to change things and to make the changes I needed administrative and parental support. I was young and brash; I wanted to make this school like the big, successful one I came from. I wanted this change to happen NOW. I got into a few dogfights, with suits and parents, that did not help my cause but could have been avoided. Hopes this helps...

I bought a Tom MacPherson clinic from CoachTube a while back. I lucked out and got it when they had a special. The presentation was good and definitely worth the money.
