We have moved from a lift-a-thon to a combine-type event that we hold in the dead time between winter and spring sports. I don't have any of the paperwork because I'm not the coach who actually runs it. We divide the team into 3 weight classes. We give awards to the player in each weight class who benches the most (5 reps) and to the player in each weight class who gets the most $$$ in donations. We also give awards to the overall best bench and most $$$ donated. The awards are gift certificates to local pizza shops, sporting goods stores, gym memberships, etc. Each player gets a t-shirt with some kind of team weight lifting logo on it. We started doing this in the school gym, but moved it to a local fieldhouse. Parents are invited, and many attend.

All coaching stipends based on various percentages of base teaching pay. I believe there are three levels to each position. I am at level 3 of football assistant; I get $7500 before taxes.

"...guys I have coached with who were elite, high-level players have often been lackluster coaches. Because they were great athletes, football was easy for them. So, once they became a coach, they would often be frustrated because they couldn't get kids to do things the way they did when they were a player." Totally agree.

Coaches:
Thinking of purchasing new headsets. Currently have Porta Phone and want to upgrade. Have heard CoachComm mentioned a lot, but don't know much about them. How do they compare to Porta Phone? Or is there another brand that we should investigate?
Looking for some suggestions/input.
Thanks.....

Our graduating seniors get one of their games jerseys (they all get the same one; they decide which one). They also get a picture plaque that contains an action photo, name, number, position, and team accomplishments (wins/losses, titles, etc). They receive these at the team banquet which is usually held sometime within two weeks after the season ends.

We go to a couple of 1-day 7on7 tournaments during the summer. Cost is approximately $250 (must pre-register) per team. 3 game minimum and 5 game maximum. Everyone gets a t-shirt.
Also, I suggest: 1-Make sure you have trainer(s) present. No matter how much it cost..... 2-Playing timed games (i.e. 20 minute running clock). We've been at tournaments where Team A was on offense and Team B was on defense for 10 minutes, then Team B was on offense and Team A was on defense. 3-If possible, have REAL officials. We've participated in tournaments where college and/or high school players officiated; there was always an avoidable issue.

Talent doesn't always win; ORGANIZED talent has a much better chance to win. A few teams in my area are very talented and shouldn't lose a game. With that being said, they lose (early in the year) because they aren't organized or don't play as a team. It's one thing to coach, organize, and create an "all for one" attitude; it's another thing to collect great athletes and simply turn them loose.
Sometimes, when Uranus blocks out the sun , the better team does not win.....

I'm not going to lie; I've had a f ew D1 kids. When I coached them, all I had to do was tell them what time the bus was leaving and make sure they were on it. As the saying goes, "Good players make good coaches."

In 50 years I have never had 15 D1 players (total) on teams I coached, let alone7 NFL players. We have lots of Ralph's who carry a lunch pail, not many Thor's who can carry Mjollnir (Thor's hammer).

"I "run" the scout D, but the OC scripts the whole thing, I'm just responsible for communicating it to the scout kids...." We try to get "the best" kids on scout defense without putting defensive starters there for the entire period. Here are the issues we run into: 1. Scout kids can't read pictures. O-line coach draws-up every front according to the script. We show to scout team; they still misalign. 2. Some kids who don't play defense(especially in secondary) have to play defense and really don't know what to do. Have to be told what to do every play. 3. After I catch MAJOR HEAT, I finally get Joey to align and react correctly, Joey is MIA from practice or has a dermatologist appointment. Now, we have to start all over again with Rufus. IMHO, running the scout defense is a form of football coaching purgatory.....

On the first day of school I would tell my students that earning an A in my class is akin to winning the Congressional Medal of Honor. I used this analogy because A- students had to go "above and beyond". It was challenging but not impossible. I was not going to reward them for doing the minimum or what was expected. BTW, I did not give extra credit and had parents complain. I would tell parents that they probably would not get a raise if they didn't exceed a quota, or if they simply came to work on time and did what they had to do for their shift. Their response was "It's not the same." When it really is.....

"...because there is not consistency between teachers." My dad once told me that one of the biggest issues with raising kids is what other parents do or don't do. The same goes for teaching. When I closed the door to my classroom, I did not expect anyone to put his foot in the way....

"...holding kids accountable or giving them consequences was "mean" or "unfair". That's not helping those kids at all." One of the last years I taught (I'm retired) I had a parent email my supervisor complaining that I did the above, but that kids weren't weren't ready for that (the kid was a junior in high school). That situation was one of the reasons I retired. Another peeve: Parents whose kids do C-level work (maybe) and want Buffy and Biff to get an A, and the teacher is supposed to make-up the difference. I guess I've ruined a lot of lives by giving students the grades they earned.

We script all group and team periods simply so that all coaches know where the ball is going and can coach their respective players. We feel that scripting also helps us make sure we're practicing what the opponent does most (defensive perspective) and makes us more efficient at practice. There's no wasted time thinking about what to run next; just follow the script. We meet after practice and discuss what we want on the next day's script so that we get enough reps without trying to "cover the ocean with a tarp". Sometimes the script contains play(s) that specifically attack the weakness of the defense. If there's an error, we fix it right on the spot by aligning and walking through the play and correcting any mistake. We ask the player(s) who errored "What did you see and what was your reaction?" Issue is usually poor player eye discipline or incorrect reaction (could be poor technique). Then we'll run the play full speed and move on in the script. The problem we have with scripting is that we are a "very veteran" staff, and some guys have a tough time reading the script and get lost.

"...looked at cleats, gloves, helmet, swag all that crap since that rarely if ever changes on a kid." We do the same since a lot of kids seem to wear something that sets them apart (fluorescent gloves, lime green cleats, etc). One year we had a special defensive call, based on a player, vs an opponent. During warm-up's we can't find that kid (by number) then realize he's wearing a different number. So we make sure that everyone knows the "new" number. We come out to start the game, and the kid is wearing his original number. We re-scramble so everyone gets the change back to original plan. After the game we find out that kid misplaced his jersey (I think left it on bus); they weren't trying to trick us. Sometimes the number we're looking for doesn't play because he's injured or suspended.

1. Do you watch film as a position group, small group (OL&RB), or whole team? If so, which one(s) and how much/often? We watch as whole team on Monday, after a brief scouting report and before we go out to field. 2. How long are your film sessions? No longer than 20 minutes. About 12 plays of opponent's offense and 12 of their defense. 3. What are you specifically watching? Game, situations, cutups, etc. We will make cut-up's of what we want to show-could be their top 5 offensive formations or their defensive alignment to certain formations.
Sometimes on Wednesdays we will watch film after practice (no more than 20 minutes).

I wear OBOZ to practice. They have a wide toe box, offer good support, and keep my feet dry. They also can take a beating and last.

I coached both my sons but I was not the position coach. Best advice is once we got in the truck I was Dad not Coach. This...100%. Did the same thing when my son played for the high school team I coached. He could say whatever he wanted in the car, and it stayed there. Luckily for the both of us, I did not coach him; I coached the other side of the ball.

Here is my two cents...I suggest focusing your "study" to one side of the ball (offense or defense) for now. Trying to learn "as much as you can about everything" is the same as trying to put a tarp over the ocean. One of the best things you can do is talk with coaches, and they don't have to be college or professional coaches. Most coaches (or least the ones I've come across) are willing to share what they know, especially with a newbie. One big reason for talking with a coach one on one is that you can get answers to those questions which pop up as the result of an original question (similar to having to clean your garage in order to find the hammer you need to pound in one nail). My only advice is to go into this meeting with some sort of agenda or list of questions. You can ask the same questions to different coaches and get multiple point-of-view. If you don't have an agenda or list of questions, you might very well spend a long time with this coach and come away with next to nothing as a result of being overwhelmed with information.

1700 students (grades 9-12) 1 head coach and 7 assistants are paid positions 5 volunteers
3 coaches work with frosh; other coaches work with 10-12 graders. We do not separate varsity and JV.

"...Unless a kid is a potential D1 kid, they're pretty much a waste of time and money. And if they are one of those kids, they'll be invited personally to them." I can't agree more (especially with frosh and sophs). A loooong time ago we had a kid invited to a D1 college camp (he was a 6'3'' 240-LB/OL); a bunch of our kids decided to go with him to that camp. The "dude" was coached by the college staff; the other guys were coached by high school coaches who didn't know if a football was inflated or stuffed with cotton. Needless to say, the non-dudes were very disappointed.

As a young assistant (a millennium ago), I learned that I was expected to be at every workout, 7 on 7, meeting, and organized team activity unless excused by HC or extenuating circumstance. I felt then, and still feel now, that being present at all the above activities is part of implied expectations of being a football coach.

I use PowerPoint, like it and agree with the above comments. I think it's easy to use, but there are a few things to learn that make PowerPoint life a bit easier. Go to: www.proquickdraw.com/visioandpowerpointThere are a couple of videos on using PowerPoint for football. IMHO, the videos are really good and extremely helpful. I re-watch them a bunch. The video shows how to make everything you need and customize it.

Tried that once a while back (10 years ago). Our headsets went bonkers, so we thought we could use our cellphones. The field was right next to a major highway and industrial area. It was not good. The screeching and high pitched noise sounded like someone was trying to probe Uranus in deep space. Don't know if it was the frequency of the phones or what was in some of the buildings behind us. After that, we decided to bring two tin cans and a string as a backup.....

Posted this on General Defense Board: Recently heard a coach on a podcast discuss how he uses this method to break down an offense. It focuses on 2nd down based on what occurred on first down (such as 2/10 after 1st down incomplete, 2/L after 1st down run, 2/S after 1st down run, 2/XL after negative play etc.). Also discusses 1st down of series, 1st down in drive, 1st down after a 3rd-4th down conversion, 1st down after explosive play, and 1st down after turnover.
I use EXCEL for my reports. So if any of you are EXCEL gurus, how do you get EXCEL to show this so that you don't have to "tag" it? I know I could set up columns and tag on HUDL, but I'm looking for a way to enter less and get more (have EXCEL do the heavy lifting). Maybe I'm looking for a unicorn.....
