We also do little things during the season at the start of practice. 40 yard dash race where kids can challenge each other (it has to be a legit challenge, no fly guys challenging fat guys), we let linemen catch a punt and kids have to decide if he'll catch it or not (really cool to see skilled guys cheering on big dudes), etc.
Takes 5 minutes or less and breaks up the season grind.

100%. It is a 3YearLetterman joke from his book in a chapter about running off horrible youth players. Don’t run this drill fellas. Wouldn't work with OL anyway. They're smart and can see a loophole in their sleep. No fair catch? Hell, they're not catching anything. That’s why the OL is the smartest group on the field.

Go play kickball one day. It will lighten things up and kids will have a blast. We also would take them to the gym and play some dodgeball if we could get into the gym. Was a good morale boost and lightened things up.

Some poor guy didn't see your second response and is running it after school today. If so, at least we will get a few months worth of content to chuckle at. It has been quiet since SyrupGate a few years back.

No fair catch punt return drill. Player with the worst off-season attendance has to field punts, but cannot signal for a fair catch. The rest of the team gets to tackle him. This will end up on twitter in a bad way when that kid gets his head knocked off and his mamas mad. But it sounds old school funny. When I was an offensive lineman in high school. One kid on our line was terrible and coaches questioned his effort so they put him at scout team qb one week. It was ugly by the end of the week the beating he took. It was nothing dangerous, but he had a better feeling of what it was like to be a qb on Friday night under pressure. 100%. It is a 3YearLetterman joke from his book in a chapter about running off horrible youth players. Don’t run this drill fellas.

I don't see it on past seasons either. I know a bit ago All 22 got wiped from the site and they only recently restored it. I'm wondering if they didn't put past seasons back up.
That would be unfortunate because to me that's why I have GamePass.

Got some updates on the clinic... we are still a go and now we have added Coach Ty Gower to the speaker schedule. We are planning on filming everything (hoping the sound quality will be good enough) and working on a way to get it to people after the fact if they really can't get here. A huge draw of the clinic is that we cater lunch on Saturday and take the whole clinic out for dinner Friday night. I'm working with restaurants to see how this will work with the Covid situation right now, but we'll make sure we feed everyone! May not be able to drink all the barley-water we normally do if we can't get a restaurant to house us all with covid issues. But coach, contrary to popular belief Utah has some of the best barley-water around!

Coaches, All things equal what topics are you most interested in hearing about at clinics. If you had a say, what would be some of the topics this year you would be most interested in hearing about? Mine would be the following: 1. Interviewing to be a Head Football Coach - from an athletic director's perspective 2. Gameplanning - O/D/K 3. Gadgets/Shot Plays 4. SPT practice drills/circuits 5. Different ways to practice/schedules 6. Situations to practice that are overlooked Drills for offense, defense, and ST. I’m trying to avoid as much x and o stuff as I can this year. I’m sick of RPO sessions on bubble and key screens when there’s so much more.

Fitness: Sleep 8+ hours a night, drink mostly water, never sit during class (helps with classroom management too). I bought a podium this year for school, and it may have been the best purchase I have made since becoming a teacher. Not that I sat at my desk a lot before it, but if I needed to complete something when students were working I had to. Now I put my laptop on the podium and scan the room as I send an email or finish some online grades as they work, and the students in the room get the sense I am way more in charge because of it. I get very minimal distractions from students now during their independent work. We got podiums in each classroom and I do the same thing with my laptop. Agree with your take on the message it sends to kids. It's just on the opposite side of my desk, but they feel like I'm more accessible to them and they're more accessible to me.

Until:
1. My wife won't tolerate it anymore 2. I retire. I still have 25 years. 3. I leave the classroom. Not sure if I want to become admin or not, but I don't think I have 25 more classroom years in me. 4. My heart just isn't in it. As of now I am excited for next season about a week after the season ends.

Had a chance to go either the second or third year that Coach Miller ran it. Easily the best clinic I've been to even still.
If you're able to make it out there, do so. Also, Utah is a really beautiful state if you've never been.

How would the rain affect it? That is my first thought. Same way it would on game night with Hudl Sideline I would think. We toss ours into ziplock bags and are good to go.

For me the weekend is family time, relax time, etc.
I have the app on my phone but seldom look at it unless I'm following a discussion that I'm really interested in. Otherwise it waits until I'm back in the classroom Monday and the students have independent work time.

but we catch all kinds of BS from bleeding heart teachers and moms whenever we win by more than 21... This. That story of the team winning by over 100 is insane. We catch flack, at least on the JV level from parents if we don't start subbing in up 2 scores which is absurd. We don't sub in if a game is that close until the last series or two in the 4th. I did once start subbing in the first quarter because we jumped out to an easy 28-0 lead. Probably should've went for the running clock but there was nothing to gain other than getting out a little quicker and it's nice to get kids some quality PT. We didn't score again because I called the dogs off early. This team was so bad. We ended up winning 28-0 and their coaches who we know pretty well were appreciative.

I believe in Michigan running clock cannot start until the second half, and you have to have a 35 point lead. I recently learned that we have a "super running clock" rule if a team is up by 50 where the clock doesn't stop for anything aside from a timeout.
New goal.

You can reward kids who meet your arbitrary Off-Season standards (T-shirts, first choice of numbers-equipment, etc.) without publicly humiliating those that don't (no helmet decal, name not on jersey, etc.). This. At one school our colors were blue and bright green. Think Seattle Seahawks current color scheme. Kids got basic UA shirts in their spirit pack, but if they met whatever arbitrary goals we had for them (I don't remember what they were at this point as it was years ago) that got and "upgraded" spirit pack shirt that had our logo in the highlighter green instead of white or blue depending on shirt color. The kids were pretty into it, and nobody was embarrassed.

The ending pissed me off. Rush is Rush. He’s scum. We know it. Valdosta probably knew it when they got him.
Nub throwing the program under the bus and being shoot/laughing about it because he felt threatened that Rush was gonna start a new booster club is petty, unacceptable, and he didn’t do right by those kids.

Having Sub-Varsity games on Saturdays would not be good idea around here. Hard enough to get coaches as it is without them not getting at least one day off a week (assuming staff does work on Sundays either together or virtually). During my career we had to finish some games on Saturdays due to weather. Talk about a good way to screw up your weekend. 100 percent. Our HC asked us JV guys a few years back about playing Saturdays so teams could 5 quarter. Bottom line is I cannot consistently coach on Saturday. We now play one a head for those 5 quarter teams and I can figure that out. No way I can do it 9 weeks. Same with the rest of the staff.

In Utah there are the Jordan Beetdiggers. Apparently the community used to be beetfarms.
The school I was at is now the Spartans, but apparently back in the day they were the Smelterites.

Alabama up downs. Had a coach tell me 15 years ago tell me that they should be called "down ups". Told him he was right. But still call them up downs. My old coach used to all them grass drills. I tell my team it is about to be up down Thursday (or whatever day it is). Addendum to my earlier post. While I do say it is a good day for up down Friday (etc), my kids probably just know these as "GET YO FEET CHOPPIN!" Every football player in America knows what get em choppin means. Might be the only universal terminology in our game.

Up downs. And a nice 5 up down refresher on the snap count after you false start in practice is always a good time. That’s about the only time we do them. False starts or offsides during practice. Receivers do push-ups for drops, and QBs do for picks.

Illinois and Iowa. Up downs. Your post is the first time I've ever heard them referred to as down ups, although that may make more sense! Ha, that argument can go both ways. Up downs makes sense because you start up and go down. Down up makes sense because you’re going down and getting up. That’s why I said it isn’t a serious topic but I was curious. I think when I was in Utah they were up downs as well.

Just got word yesterday......Oregon will require masks K-12. I've got a funny feeling this won't help football numbers for the 2nd year in a row. I've already heard of a handful of families that will opt out of sending their kids to be masked in school and have them do online or homeschool instead........again. We've already lost good football kids to, "I can do my school stuff at home, them go work and make money instead of sports." Wouldnt those kids have to wear masks at work? Assuming their kids that work at fast food places and whatnot, I see the kids at fast food places in Ohio and Michigan still wearing masks. As of now, we have been told back to normal. I live in Ohio, work in Michigan and neither state has announced more than that. Like I am sure others feel, but as a private school, we will lose students if we go back to masks or any kind of remote learning. We already had quite a bit of teacher turnover from teachers who had enough of all the BS and went into private sector or teaching virtuallly. Here in Michigan Whitmer has been going hard saying we aren’t returning to a mandate (I don’t think she can issue one anymore after powers being stripped) and that it would be up to businesses and districts. Our district said all summer long they’d be optional but I have a hunch that this could be changing. I don’t expect a firm decision for a few more weeks.
