Nope, southern california playoffs are now in semi finals which we did not make. They take all the playoff qualifiers here, line them up by power rankings, then divide up the brackets as such (competitive equity). Guess we won our last regular season game by too much, because we went from being a top seed in the division we thought we’d end up in, to the bottom seed in the next division up. Lesson learned fir next year. Dont perform at your best in the season, get an easier path to a ring That's...messed up.

We are in the D1 (largest division in Michigan) state semifinals next Saturday and I was just sitting here reflecting on how thankful I am to be in this position, and how I'm really just enjoying the ride.
I don't know what Saturday will bring, but I've loved every moment of this ride. Currently sitting at 10-2. Have had a lot of roller coaster games where we just keep finding ways to get it done in the end.
Idk, enjoy it if you're still playing fellas. We cranked on the lights for practice after school last week and we talked about how you're always in a good place if you need the lights for an afternoon practice.

When coaches say "we'll carry X number of things into a game," what that means to me is that they have their core stuff they KNOW they'll carry every week, and then they're giving themselves a little room to either bring something back that they installed earlier *or* they may find they need to put in something new for that week (maybe a formation, tag, blitz, coverage, front, or even a play) on top of the old stuff. My philosophy is that you install all the stuff you want to install in camp, then you look at it, work on it, and after a week or two you start cutting out the things that aren't working or are more trouble than they're worth before the season even starts. This. We have our core stuff and then wrinkles every week off of some of that stuff. The wrinkles just depend on scout film. Also agree on installing in camp and then narrowing down your focus a bit. Best example here is we said we wanted to run spot/snag, but found our QB wasn't great at it for whatever reason, and we weren't making it a priority to rep it enough anyway so it's out for now.

I don't have the answer, but I hate when coaches call them karaokes.

kids saying the F / N / B / S / R word and nobody correcting it R word is a massive pet peeve. Otherwise we don't have a ton of the other ones going on. Kids will drop an F bomb every now and then but it hasn't really been out of control.

Setting up the camera system! First off...I'm old. This is my first year back in coaching after a 20 year hiatus in the business world. When I last coached, game film was done on a VHS camcorder. I'm at a small high school in a small Midwestern state. This season I was tasked to set up this video system and things. Dear Lord! Should I have asked to attend a training course at NASA on how to set up this thing? Are these game video clips being beamed off some Elon Musk satellite? I'll admit, Hudl is a pretty useful tool, but I say give me a 42" tube TV strapped onto an A/V cart on wheels and a Cowboy Clicker any day! Coming from a "young" coach that has been tasked with all of that by default just because I'm the youngest - I'm willing to help you out in any way I can through this medium. I'm not a "tech savvy" person by any means - setting up the video stuff is one of my least favorite parts of my job, but I have gotten over it. I'm tech savvy and have phucked it up pretty much all but 3 or so weeks lol

I do the upstairs stuff (easy enough) and another guy does our endzone stuff. We only had 3 home games this year (5 now through playoffs) so dividing it made sense since we're on limited time most weeks. The effing iPads never work. WiFi signal problems, clips not downloading right, etc. It's been constant grief and I hate this role.

All league bench warmer baby!!!!
In all seriousness, I was mediocre. Found my way into some roles in a powerhouse program. This was back in the day before kids transferring like crazy over PT. Probably could've started a mile down the road, but it wouldn't have been as enjoyable an experience.

Any programs here utilizing TikTok? If so, what are you doing with it? So far I've been sharing things like highlights, top 10 rankings (we're often in there), and what I've called "Celine Dion play of the week" where I take a highlight and put the Titanic song over it. If you've ever seen "Celine-a-scene" on social media you'll know what I'm describing. Back to the point, what are you guys doing with it if you use it? We've always lacked in the social media department and I want us to do better. If the Titanic Play of the Week goes to a play that was a total disaster I've seen thousands that could be nominated. Are you talking the slowest pick 6 ever, or the tackle screen that should've been called back? Both were fun plays, neither were amazing.

No, I don't want the Chinese to compile my playbook from all the highlights and then sell it on Alibaba to my enemies. Can never be too careful.

How does having a Official Tik Tok equate to wins on Friday nights? Off the top of my head without doing a deep dive to think about this, we do fun things as a program sometimes off the field. Sometimes word gets out that we do fun things. That might get a hooper, or wrestler, or some other athlete not playing a fall sport to come up and play football (has happened before). Sometimes those are kids who weren't playing, but should've been. Better players = more wins. Does it directly help us with a win this Friday? Nah, but sometimes we're allowed to have fun. We've been pretty successful around here for a while now.

Yes "bro." Kids are all on it. They like it. They use it more than Twitter, which every program has and uses.

Guys that are absolute Twitter/Facebook "culture" guys, especially the first year assistants. Just learn the game from your mentors and peers, watch film, coach your kids, share their successes, and celebrate the school/community. Hate lectures on commitment, veiled tweets and "what the lion does in the morning". Ridiculous position names. "We return our phaser, smoker, bobcat and bomber, but we still need to find a crash on defense". Calling a timeout before a punt if you have 10 on the field. Take the delay. You're giving the ball away anyway and the timeout is more valuable than 5 yards. Kids like the absurd position names and I'm kind of bought in on that. Gives them a sense of ownership. I'm the only "badger" on the field or whatever. It's dumb, but does create some buy in.

My biggest pet peeve is when kids leave their helmet unattended on the sideline... for some reason it drives me crazy The reason might be that if you need him to go into the game all of a sudden (injury, personnel package, etc.) and he can't find his bonnet - he's not ready to play and not worth the Delay of Game penalty? When I played we had a strict you cannot take off your helmet rule without permission (even on gameday) for this very reason. Probably a bit extreme, but I get it now being older and wiser.

I have three classroom rules I introduce the start of the year, in addition to school rules. Rule #2 is that my name is "Mr. (my last name)" or "Coach (my last name)". Not Bro, or dude, or anything like that. I add on that once you graduate from High School, when you get that diploma in your hand, you can call me whatever you want, until then its Mr. (my last name)" or "Coach (my last name). The fun part is when kids get that diploma, and while walking across the stage are eager to call me by my first name or bro- to finally do it. But I don't put up with anyone calling me bro that isn't a good friend of mine. I'll yell at the workers at Dutch Bros. Coffee when they try to pull that nonsense. As soon as a student calls me bro or dude, I start using it nonstop. That stops them real quickly. The last couple years, I've said lit, no cap, throwing shade, etc. more than any student which means they don't say any of that in my room. I do this as well. Nothing kills stupid slang more than an adult using it lol

non varsity coaches (and ESPECIALLY VARSITY COACHES) just throwing the ball back and forth in pregame for no reason players not getting mental reps at practice when not in (I understand and accept some grab asss, but when it is enough and I say it is, it's over) not having helmet on during game ready to go in selfish players coaches assigned eyes to look at something specific that just watch the game school admin that badmouth the coaches in the stands admin that don't follow chain of command 7on7 coaches that don't run the offense coaches that fail kids with a 69 parent that thinks they know football and want to show you in the board (lol, although kind of funny when you wipe the floor with them) band directors that go too long at halftime and get you a penalty band directors that don't know when to play during a game or don't care kids that want to wear pink stuff and other doo dads to look cool instead of knowing their keys/reads etc---you know, the stuff that matters defensive coach recruiters that have no idea about force players or option responsibilities refs that don't realize a flexbone fullback leaves on the snap and it looks different than other offenses because it is so quick refs that think any scoop is a high low announcers that talk about "reading the qb's eyes" seeing the same generic spread offense every week hearing dumbassss announcers and parents talking about dinosaur offenses and they have no clue any sort of recruiting service that costs money any sort of AAU style private anything outside of the program key jingler coaches that just want to leave instead of getting the work done coaches that don't do laundry or other stuff needed around the field house extraneous people on the sideline that have not been cleared by the hc cheerleaders too close to the ol bench coaches that talk kids into just playing one sport pep rallys commie teachers, counselors, admin that are actively against football coaches that bail out of doing other events throughout any athletic season to work, for any reason when they were told at the start of the year they were needed coaches on cell phone at practice unless emergency calling 911 coaches with a big gulp at a scrimmage coaches trying to line up their defense on the field in a scrimmage coaches going past the numbers dragging headset coaches bitcccching at refs if they are not the hc coaches that don't let it happens in the field house stays in the field house coaches that argue about a scheme/tech thing---get overruled then do their own stuff (get fired ime) coaches that bitcch about the other side of the ball to their players (get fired ime) I got more The coaches warming up the ole noodle is a huge pet peeve for me in pregame lol. It looks so stupid. Also, kids who don't play/won't ever throw the ball doing it is also a peeve, but better than grown ass men.

Coaching with a lack of common sense drives me nuts. As an AD, I had a volleyball coach who would tally up the number of poor serves and make the girls run sprints for each one. The kids were running sprints for 20+ minutes at the beginning of practices following games. They could easily spend 40-50 minutes per week being punished for not being competent at a skill. We had a conversation that went nowhere ("Serving is easy, they need the running to learn to focus.") and it took a formal write-up to get her to actually rep friggin' serving.. Funny thing: we became a better serving team after the write-up. Huh..the team got better once they actually got coached up on the skill? Go figure LOL

brooks beast I told my equipment guy to not even buy me whatever they were going to get I have honestly never heard of this brand until this thread, I am going to have to check them out I cant recommend Brooks enough. I switched to Ghosts for running a few years ago and will never wear another shoe again. Eliminates a lot of the aches my fatass was having.

I'd suggest figuring out WHAT you want to gain a deeper understanding of and doing a deep dive on that.
Problem with generalized questions like this is that there is so much information out there, that it's hard to point you to a general place to go.
If I'm learning more about inside and outside zone, I can't necessarily go to the same place as I might if I wanted to learn about Saban's cover 7 or whatever.
Once you have figured out on a more specific level what you're looking to learn, we'll have an easier time pointing you to some great resources.

A good pen, a visor and the drive for #GrndSzn. True, we once had a great coach on this very board who was basically living out of his car/homeless, but he had a nice pen damnit.

We're on our second round of turf now. Pretty sure that we got a little more than 12 years out of it but it was in pretty rough shape at the end. Definitely cheaper for subsequent installs.

I did this a few coaching stops ago. The only time it really was awkward was when we came up and played my former school. The transition down there was fine (it probably helped that it was a brand new staff).
Coming back was also fun. I was a celeb in the student section.

It was a good question. Sadly my favorite football documentary ever, Division 3: Football's Finest, does not address this aspect of the game. I saw this post and thought, "wow this sounds really cool. I've never heard of this documentary before. I better look it up and find out." You just 3 year letterman'd me. LOL Let’s go! It’s a hilarious movie if you are into vulgar humor.

# of times my D1 RB carries the ball. actually, in the spirit that the OP intended this thread, this could be a meaningful statistic. tracking the amount of times your best player was able to get the ball Yeah, no question. Have to get the ball to dudes. The best defenses we see might not be the most talented, but they are able to find ways to limit some of the touches that dudes get.
