I know of a team that had a really bad experience in 2019. Kid got seriously hurt. If you are going to do them, make sure you know what you are doing and you have the proper equipment. And ask yourself, is the juice worth the squeeze? In other words, if something bad does happen, how are you going to explain and justify the drill to administrators?

i'm walking out if a presenter ends every sentence with a call for affirmation "K?" "aight?" "yeah?" Coaches are brutal with these tics Oh, and be sure to take out the 1/4 lb of dip in your mouth before you start your lecture Somewhere, Matt Eberflus’s ears are burning.

What’s your budget? We hired a company to come in and do a professional install. Speakers are mounted on the walls and the amplifier is stored in a lockable box that is also mounted on the wall. Whole system is Bluetooth compatible. It’s awesome. About how much did that run you? My initial thought is to get 4 1200w speakers that will all connect to my phone via Bluetooth. I’m thinking it was around $2,000 for all the equipment and the install.

If you are going to be bad, play a lot of kids.
The idea being that if you are losing, parents won’t be as tough because their kids are at least playing. And a lot less grousing on the sideline.

Don't put on a clinic on the field. Coach them on the run and fix it in film is probably the best advice I ever got. I like this too: Unironically Michael's advice to Dwight is probably the best advice I ever received. "Stop sucking"- that's what the coach I played for and later coached under told me when I asked him for advice upon taking over a bad program. Don't do the obviously dumb and detrimental things that sucky teams do. Have a solid plan on O/D/ST + in the weight room. Maintain a disciplined and structured program. Be a good role model, etc. Just don't suck Or as Michael put it "don't be an idiot" Heard Hugh Wyatt say that at a clinic about 15 years ago. Should be on a t-shirt.

Years ago, I was coaching on a team that had a kid like this. Very good player for us. The head coach didn’t want to lose him because he was such a good player.. So they tried to work around his issues. The kid didn’t go to practice on Monday because he had court-mandated counseling and then he missed every other Tuesday because he had to see his probation officer. The kid actually scheduled those appointments after school so he could miss practice. He only practiced on Wednesday and Thursday and still was a 2-way starter on Friday. And he was a bad kid. And he kept getting extra chances. As good as he was, he did not make a difference. We still ended up 3-6. In hindsight, what we should have done was create some kind of behavior contract with him and held him to it and when he violated it, he would have a consequence like sitting out a game. It sounds like the kid in this thread is similar. Given that, I would sit down with the administration and create a behavior contract with consequences for noncompliance
Last thing…if you are going to kick a kid off the team, I would recommend having paperwork and records of why you are kicking him off the team.

Administration is trying to help, but they are cautious with anything that doesn’t happen at school. Which is a big reason why the problem has gotten this far out of hand. They will back me with whatever I decide to do. I’m very lucky in that aspect. They let me run my team the way I want, they just want me to communicate with them so they aren’t blindsided with anything. There may not be a right answer for this problem. I’m just looking for some advice. I figure somebody has been in this spot before and may be able to share a little wisdom. I do appreciate the comments so far. If the administration “is cautious with anything that doesn’t happen at school”, how can you be sure that they will support you if you kick a kid off the team for something that didn’t happen at school? Honestly, without alll the details, it sounds like you are getting set up. I’ve seen situations like this before in which administrators pledged their support, only to pull it after they see which way the wind blows. What is this kid saying on social media? Is he talking bad about you (“throwtheballcoach doesn’t know what he’s doing” or “he isn’t using me correctly”) or is he saying bad things about his teammates? If so, what are his complaints? Before doing anything, you should meet with the administrators and tell them exactly what you are going to do to handle the situation if it continues. Then explain it to the kids and his parents. And then follow through.

The kid is an all-area player in both sides of the ball. The best player on the team without question. The other kid is probably the second best player though, lol. We live in a small, rural community so everybody knows what’s going on. After the legal issue I must have been asked 10 times what I was gonna do about it. I’m not gonna let his ability factor in my decision. I want to do what is best for the program, but I also want to help this kid get his crap together before he does something even more stupid. Where is your administration in all of this? Do you even have the authority to prevent the kid from being on the team? What guidance have you received? I wouldn’t do anything until you know what the administration will and won’t support.

If it's social media stuff, get the administration involved. It's possible, if not probable, that your school has a policy addressing inappropriate online behavior outside of school.
Question...why is this kid in a position in which anyone cares what he thinks? Is he a good player? If he's just some slapdick, I would ignore it. By addressing it, you are giving him the attention he needs.

Teams that are great on defense but scuffle on offense has always been a huge red flag for me that the coaches are just rolling the ball out there because they have a bunch of really good athletes.

I don't think there has ever been a year that I coached varsity football that there werent at least a couple of future D1 players on the roster. They just need a chance, Coach! People been sleeping on them! 😂

Had one about 20 years ago. Kid walked on at a Big 10 school (LB) and was on the way to earning a scholarship but the head coach got fired. The new guy who came in cut all the walk-ons from the previous regime and the kid’s career was over.
Had another kid who had a decent amount of FCS interest but his grades were awful. He ended up an All Conference DE at a good D3 program.

Well, 1. It's in Naperville, so entitled has to be thrown in 2. Lots of power words and educational buzz phrases thrown in by the parents and asst coaches 3. In the end, this just boils down to the parents were pissy, decided they'd "show that coach" and the coach said " {censored} that {censored}" and beat them to the punch. It’s actually Hinsdale. But 6 of one, a half dozen of another.

Was a freshman coach in a program where the fresh team and the varsity ran Double Wing with at least 1 WR most of the time. Fresh played Thurs and varsity Fri. The next Monday our JV comes out in triple I double tight. I was sitting in the booth next to the camera and pretty loudly said "What the hell is this?" I meant it as, what the hell are they running? Apparently during film the JV coaches turned the sound up and made fun of me as if I wasn't smart enough to figure out their mastermind scheme. The JV coach eventually got fired/resigned before the season was over. He applied for the HC job that winter when I ended up getting it. Needless to say, I had a lot of problems with those JV kids in my 1 year as a HC there. That coach continued to hang around the program while his kids were in school and cause problems until even his wife had enough of him and divorced him. Guy used to have kids over to his house to show them highlight films of him playing in HS and college. He was that guy. And then he became famous as 3 year letterman I bet he threw some devastating downfield blocks.

On a side note, I am phasing out 40s and 80s. No one wants them. I never ordered #1 or #69. Those numbers always attract the same kind of kid. I know you'll still have those kids on your team, but I didn't want to feed them. Ha! Every kid I have ever known who wore 69 was a smartass! 😂

There’s a school up our way that has the same uniforms, freshmen through senior. Most kids get a number as a freshman and keep that number as long as they go through the program. I do think they allow returning players to change their number if a number becomes available through graduation.
This is a small rural school that usually has around 40-50 kids total in the program. Obviously, this would be much harder to do at a big school

Update for the FTC crowd : Brad Dixon and Camp Point Central (CPC) won the 1a state championship in Illinois this morning. They took down the Lena-Winslow (LW) Panthers, who were playing for a 4th consecutive state title and have not lost a game since the spring Covid season in 2021. Last year, LW beat CPC 30-8 in the title game last year. Today, CPC won 14-0. The LW line outweighed the CPC line by almost 50lbs a man yet CPC controlled the line of scrimmage. By the 4th Qt, CPC had worn LW down. I have never seen that happen to a LW team in the postseason. Tip of the cap to Coach Dixon and the CPC Panthers. So, needless to say, Coach Dixon is going to be a really popular and busy guy this offseason. Apparently the other team is a FTC team also. I have not heard of LW being an actual “FTC” school, at least to the extent that CPC is. With that being said, they do have a very strong track and field tradition. Historically, the best football players at LW do track and field (or the best track and field athletes played football, however you want to look at it). In fact, the former LW T&F coach, who has since retired, was the LW JV coach for a really long time. So the football program at LW certainly supports the T&F program and encourages football players to do track (and vice versa).

Watching the Illinois 4a state title game. Rochester vs. St. Laurence.
Rochester came out in a formation something like this:
O…..O………………O..X..O…………..O..O …………………………………………….O……..O …………………………….Q ……………………………………………………O
QB got the snap and then threw a backwards pass to the receiver on the quads side. Pass was incomplete but the receiver didn’t go after the loose ball. Looked like the kid didn’t realize it was a live ball. St. Laurence recovered the ball and then scored a TD. I’m assuming it was going to be some kind of double pass.
Oof. 😂

Shotgun in short yardage never bothered me, Single Wing teams do it every snap and no one bats an eye These ARE NOT single wing teams.

Something that irritated the crap out of me was teams staying in gun in short yardage situations and running the ball by handing off to a back. It seemed to me that the vast majority of these plays got blown up. I would much prefer getting the QB under center in those situations so the RB can get a full head of steam. As a DC I always felt that the offense did us a favor by going gun in short yardage. Besides giving the RB a running start , being UC presents the threat of QB sneak. Taking away that threat allows us to open up the defense a little. There's nothing more embarrassing than giving up an easy TD on a predictable, simple play. No play is more simple than a QB sneak. Yep. Exactly. I always feel like the defense has the upper hand when the offense runs out of gun in short yardage.

Or you can have the RB get the snap. The end result is typically the same. Just get under center!

Are schools like Lincoln part of an association like the NCAA or the NAIA? If so, how? Don’t schools have to meet certain criteria to be in an association like the NCAA or NAIA?
