Ok, I went to this event today with one of my assistant coaches. This guy is the real deal, I just can't figure out why people knock this guy on footballscoop, evidentally they don't really know this guy at all.
His offense is broken down so I could understand it. He covered all his basic package and gave additional insights into how to attack what he calls "bastard defenses", that are unsound in their front/coverage combination. He went from X's & O's to walk-thru's to cut-ups to some game tapes. It was pretty cool to see his teams at Emporia State and his offense at Wyoming just gash through opposing defenses. Wyoming was very interesting, because they were playing teams that were just flat out better athletically than them and they just ran and threw the ball at will. I was shocked to see how he outrushed Air Force one week and then came back a couple weeks later and out-passed BYU in the same season with this package. When he says it's balanced, I thought I would have a 50-50 ratio of run to pass, but he actually means that you take what they give you and sometimes you look like a rushing team and other times you are a passing team ... Basically don't force anything. That was my initial hang-up, my coaching experience had me locked into forcing certain plays, but he opened my eyes up to seeing the whole defense and attacking it.
Coach Matsakis was also tireless, he stayed overtime on Friday night and came in early the next day, because one coaching staff needed to leave because we had a snowstorm coming. He said that he was working on improving this significantly (not sure how he can), by the time he has his next event in January. I'm coming again and bringing an extra assistant, he said no additional fee and if I wanted to I could even bring my quarterback (never heard of that one, he did say that I better check the rules on that one first). Initially, I thought I would take him up on his outrageous guarantee, but I would have paid twice that amount for the information alone; let alone what he says he is coming up with on his special access website.
A guy like this needs to be coaching, I just wonder why he is putting all this information out there? Very impressive and he really enjoys what he is doing.
