6:30-8:30 AM and 5-7 PM, for a two-a day. We are supposed to be under an "oppressive heat" warning next week. We're trying to keep the kids out of the sun. Plus, we have some coaches and players that still have to work during the day.
We are going to alternate after the first 4 days of two-a-days. We are going to go 2 practices- 1 practice- 2-1, etc. On the one practice day we are going 6:30-10:30 AM and are splitting the times for Varsity and Freshman (small school so we have all the kids together).
6:30-8:30 - Freshman weights and conditioning/ Films/ Chalk-Talk - Varsity Practice 8:30-10:30- Freshman pracitce- Varsity weights/conditioning/films/Chalk-Talk.
During the 5-7 PM time of 2-a-days we are going to bring in specific groups from 4-5 PM.
This way we can have as many available coaches for the practices and be a little more detailed and specific. WE hope that alternating practices will decrease on the injuries and improve the overall effort and attention paid in practice.

We are a small, private school and our kids are all over the county with many of them without driver's license. To minimize the impact on parents, kids, and us we have one LONG practice from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM.
We spend about 3 hours on the field and the other hour in the gym, weight room, or viewing video. We'll follow this schedule for the first week and then go to our regular schedule of 3:30 to 5:45 PM.

I know a guy in a small rural school who had great success. His two-a-days were 8 am-Noon. They would go 50 minutes on the field, 10 minutes off. The kids had to work corn detasseling or on the farm, so he promised parents they'd be done by the shank of the day.

We split ours. We do defense in the morning 7-9 then offense in the afternoon 4-6. We like to have a break in between because the kids can rest and the coaches can get some other things done. A few years ago we had a conflict with summer school se we had our morning practice from 5-7. We don't have lights. It's quite an experience running a tackling drill in the dark.

3:45-6:00p.m. and 7:00-9:00p.m. We have lots of farm kids, so we don't want them or their parents to have to make multiple trips to town. We will start practice on Aug. 14 with school starting on Aug. 17, so on Thursday and Friday our kids will be in school all day and then have two-a-day practices.

We go from 4-8 pm. Mon- Fri About an hour of meetings and then practice for 2 1/2 to 3 hours. Get a bit of a break in the long practice for more water / energy bar etc...
Allows coaches who have other jobs to be there. Avoid heat and sun. Allows players to enjoy summer in day / work etc...
Worked well last year.

Single practice for us. We have year-round conditioning and lifting, plus a spring and summer program. And a week-long contact camp. Our entire offense and defense is already installed.

Read an article in "Coaching Management" magazine that practices should be no longer than 2 1/2 hours with at least three hours' recovery time in between.
So, we go from 9-11:30 am and 3-5:30 pm.
We start at 9 am because, although I'm a morning person, I like easing into the day (allows me to get practice plans run off and other paper work done) and want the dew gone before we start handling the ball.
We are careful about the heat, especially in the afternoon. We give the kids water at least every 20 minutes.
Plus, the first three days are for conditioning, in helmets only. Most of our kids are already in decent shape and acclimated anyway as we have had 19 workouts and six days of camp in the summer.

We go 4-9. First 30 minutes - chalk/video - outside 1 1/2 hours, cool down and snack in the gym 45 to 60 minutes -- outside 1 1/2-2 hours. I would rather practice all in the morning but have assistants who can't do that.

I am at a small rural school and have a problem getting all of the kids there sometimes. So I make it easy on the parents, the kids will report at 7:30 am on Aug 7 and we will do a five day team camp at the school for the first week of practice. Three 1.5 hr practices starting at 8 am and ending at 7 pm mixed in with meetings, video sessions, a little free time and a whole lot of team building/comraderie. Our varsity is 9-12 so it helps to bring the under classmen up to speed as well as getting all installation out of the way so we can get on with reps and game planning. Works for us!

7:30 - noon
7:30-9:30 lift (Monday & Friday only), condition, special teams, individual 9:15-9:45 Break inside, eat fruit, drink fluids, cool off, take a cool shower if they want, change shirts, meet 9:45 - noon O & D group & team work
We went to this last year by a suggestion of a rival coach. Players and coaches absolutely loved it. Way better than morning and afternoon IMHO. The players get a chance each afternoon to really rest, eat, recover, and most importantly re-hydrate. We were more enthusatic and learned more. We got more done. It was great. Will never go back to morning and afternoon.

Does anybody run their first two-a-day at a special time. A school close to here has their first practice at Midnight. The kids think it is really cool. I would hate to deal with the parents, though. And I am not sure how they get around curfew and all.

Yeah, a lot of schools do that around here -- one school in particular has the whole town come out - as big a crowd as for their games. You can probably get around curfew laws if you talk to the right people. Been at other places where the neighborhood around the stadium was against it and got it stopped.
I have done it once -- the kids were fired up practicing at that time. I thought it was great except it kind of screwed up the practice routine for the next day. Tough to ask a kid to come to Midnight Madness and then want him back on the field the next morning. We have to practice late the first day due to scheduling problems. We tell the kids we plan on practicing late into the playoffs so we can afford to start our first day of practice later than the other teams!

8:00-10:00 am then off to classes(we are already in school) then 4:00-6:00 pm. In our rural community we have athletic busses that leave promtly at 6:15 pm.
