But turned into a dud, in the NFL. Now your player could of had a nice career..but you thought he was a sure-fire lock to Stardom and hall-of-fame glory!!
My choice ..and its tough..is either Keyshawn Johnson or Ron Dayne..
Going with Keyshawn Johnson though..I saw this guys body, and how dominant he was at USC and thought..wow ..there isn't anyone in the NFL that can cover him. Man ..i missed that one.

hmmmm....Todd Maranovich comes to mind as does any QB from Oregon or Cal under Tedford that fizzled once they left him for the NFL.

tony"juice"mandrich tackle, green bay packers.
ron dayne they did not use him right at NY. he is a pounder, takes 10 to 15 carries just to get him warmed up.
he is a 25 to 30 carry a game back just like eric dickerson was. however these days they do not do that.
they also let him get his weight up and he needs to have it down. he has to do that himself though.

I recruited this player once from the De Anza jr. college out in california and was labled a risk player. (JK) When he showed up he was a solid blue chip player who was on the fast track to the NFL!
Do you know this guy Goldenbear?? LOL

Not too many players I know , who've gone to DeAnza JC and made it into the pros. Only 2 come to mind: Merin Fernandez and Jay-can't remember his last name, but he went to Fresno state after Deanza, played for the Steelers. Reason I ask is b/c I played 2 years at DA back in the days....

Big D, I was just playing around with Goldenbear. I recruited him to play for me back in the mid 90's.

Hey JD, I think that kid you recruited went to DeAnza High school..and then JC at Diablo Valley..I thought for sure he was the next All-American OL to come out of Minot State..but an injury ended all hopes of NFL Super Glory. Now he lives vicariously thru young football players in Oregon. haha.

It pains me to admit this, but I thought the Bears got a real steal when Cade McNown fell to them in whatever year that would have been. Proves how much I know about QB play anyway.

yeah...what a specimen he was...came out of college as what? a frosh?...then blew out his knee...never the same...he was "earl campbell with speed" for one year. there are so many busts its nearly impossible to put them all down. I used to be a big draftnik...remember Dan McGwire and the kid from Notre Dame, ...same draft...who will go first...Mirer or McGwire???who cares...they both fell short of expectations.

Remember Mike Mamula out of Boston College? He was a 1st round pick by the Eagles after blowing people away at the combine. "Everyone" thought he would be a pro-bowl type DE. He impressive combine stuff but was not really a great football player.

Most of the good ones have been mentioned. I agree with Leaf and Zorich.
Even more interesting to me, how many times has this happened to you with players on your team? I know I've identified kids early as "studs" and they just didn't pan out, for whatever reason. It'd be interesting to know why and if we as coaches tend to have a bias for certain types of kids.
Has anyone here ever read the book Blink, by Malcolm Gladwell? I did some traveling this summer and I read it as a good plane book, it's available in just about any bookstore/airport/gas station. The whole book is just about first impressions of sorts, good and bad. I wonder how often I and others have just been like "that S.O.B. just looks like a football player" and gave them way more chances than they deserved, and maybe underused some kids who didn't have the same "look." It obviously happens a lot at the NFL level, so I'm sure it's happened to me as well as to coaches I have lots of respect for. I wonder if there's really any way to get around it. I mean we use 40 times, bench press, squats, cleans and jump rope, but can you ever just watch a kid on the field and be truly objective about it? Especially if he's not screwing up, just not "living up to potential" as we all like to say.

All the above mentioned plus David Klingler and Heath Schuler. Loved the Marcus Dupree reference I thought he was going to rewrite the record books.

Did we mention the "BOZ" yet? I like the Marcus DePree one too. The Rams took him late in the draft right? I think they took another RB ahead of him even. Speaking of runningbacks how about Maurice Clarett? Total bust this far.

WR Mike Williams (Lions) - figured he'd be a can't miss out of USC RB Ricky WIlliams over Edgerrin James
I think a lot goes into whether a player becomes "good" or not in the NFL. Sometimes the stars just align with good coaching, good management, and good athletic skill.....that takes a lot for that to happen. Sometimes a player can crap out with a bad organization, but could've realized his potential under a different system / franchise, I mean, how many 1st round players have the Cardinals destroyed?

Remember this guy? It kind of goes along with what Brophy said. He was pretty much a bust when he was with Tampa. At least he wasn't a sure Hall of Famer yet. Also here is a link to draft guru Mel Kiper's picks for the biggest draft busts in recent years. espn.go.com/melkiper/s/2001/0406/1168617.html

How about Andy Katzenmoyer? He was huge for the Buckeyes and never amounted to much, maybe injuries hurt him too but that wasn't the only thing. Man Iloved that guy too.

Johnnie Cooks, LB from MSU taken early in the first round by the Colts in the early 80's. Any Penn State RB taken after Lydell Mitchell and Franco Harris. (Although I believe Larry Johnson could reverse the trend we'll know in a couple years) Gino Torretta or just about 90% of the Heisman Winners over the last 30 years.
