How effective do you find a pre-season jamboree (multi-team scrimmages) to be compared to scrimmaging a single team?
In our section (CA NCS) have a 10 game/week regular season with week 0 being a scrimmage game. If you have a pre-season week 0 scrimmage, have you ever done a 4-5 team jamboree? This season we're scheduled to scrimmage a team that is not in our section and is 50 miles away. They are coming to our place, we went there last year. I'm thinking I may ask them to participate in a jamboree and find 2 other teams to come in as well.
In a 4-team event you would scrimmage each of the other 3 teams in a 20-minute set, actually more time than a regular game. In each scrimmage you would have 10 min on offense, 10 on defense. I know there is a lot more work to manage those teams/players/officials/site/etc., but it seems that a jamboree environment would present more challenges/different things to your team than a single team and would be beneficial.
Any recommendations/war stories about these type of jamboree's would be welcome.
Thanks

We host a 6 team scrimmage/jamboree. Three of the teams are conference foes and the other three are non-conference. We scrimmage each non-conference team and run about 15-20 plays on offense and 15-20 plays on defense per opponent. This has worked very well for us.

When I coached in Oklahoma, we would be involved in 2 4-team scrimmage/jamborees. One at home one away. We would go 15 plays on offense and 15 on defense against each of the other 3 teams. We would have all 4 teams going at the same time starting at the 40 on their side of the field. We also at times would have the JVs going on the practice field. Sometimes teams would want to go again, so when everyone had had a chance to go the ones that wanted to go again would go. We always served watermelon afterward or, sometimes the boosters grilled burgers for everyone. The players got to mingle and talk to some degree. We felt it was great to get us ready for our first game and no where we were as a team.

When I was in Colorado, I loved the jamboree. We would get to scrimmage against three other teams in one day. Here in Kansas we are not allowed to scrimmage vs. anyone other than our jv.

In Minnesota, almost everyone is involved in scrimmages with 4 or more teams. The advantage of multiple teams is that you get to see different looks on both sides of the ball.

We are in a four team jamboree and we have another scrimmage before we get into the season... we have had discussions around dropping the jamboree for a regular scrimmage but we feel as though the minimum 120 guaranteed reps on offense, defense and some special team reps as well against different types of defenses and offenses within three hours is too valuable not to participate. Plus, the host school feeds the kids and staff. Makes for a good day of football.

Jamboree is the only way to go!!! There are so many more teams that give you a good look and so many things you get to look at. It ends up being more time and more plays. Value wise, jamboree gets much more bang for your buck!!!

I'm not crazy about jamborees. In the ones that I've been in it seemed that the seconds did't get enough work, there was too much down time, and they get too competetive. I much prefer a scrimmage with a team whose coach we trust.

in GA, we went from jamboree to 2 scrimmagees to 1.
I'm not sure which one I prefer.

We do a scrimmage against one team (not regular season opponent) after the first week in pads. Then the next week we participate in a four team Jamboree against three other teams that we will be playing in the regular season. The scrimmage is always very helpful to me because I'm not concerned with "what I show" or what plays I will run. In the Jamboree, all the teams are trying to keep it very vanilla to not show each other much....and we're all trying to scout each other. Plus, we actually get more reps in the regular scrimmage (4 sets of 10 plays). In the Jamboree, we only get 3 sets of 10 plays.
