I was recently at the Notre Dame Coaches Clinic. During Charlie Weis' talk about empty protection he stated “That when it comes to reading a defense there is really only 3 players you have to identify, the 2 safeties and the MLB. They tell you every thing." I understand the concept with the safeties, but what does the MLB tell you? Any input would be most appreciated.

In protection 90% of schemes are some kind of BOB. In these schemes, the 4 DL & the MLB are the ones that the OL are responsible for. Once the MLB is identified, then the OL & QB know who the "unblockable" people are. If those people come, then the "hot" package is used.

Also, particularly if you are running mirrored routes, reading the drop of the MLB (strong or weak) on his first three steps tells the QB what the "buzz" system (as Sid Gillman called it) is. In other words, tells QB where to go with the ball.

Mike also directs the protection for the line, especially in Weis' system. He has the QB identify the Mike presnap on every play.
