All things being equal, which way do you guys think is the best way to construct an offense or move the football/score points/win games when you have the rock?
1) Football is a physical game. Run power football, pass of off that, be physically superior.
2) Balanced offense - finesse combined with power and pass. Take what they give you.
3) Basketball on grass - pass to get ahead, be able to run to kill the clock (or wear out the scoreboard). After all, it's a "skilled" game.
(NO HEDGING - these are your only choices - and I said all things being equal!!)

If all things are equal I like #1.
My present team is not close to being equal, there fore we are #3.

GONG!!
I said which way do you THINK is the best way, not which way do you HAVE to do it. Remember - all things - facillities, staff, numbers, support, etc. are equal.
Guys, it's a philosophical question, not a reality one.

#2..... balance. now, i have ability to really "spread" the defense as i have the ability to utilize all playmakers and manipulate spacing and matchups in my favor more so than if i was only 1-dimensional

#2. The defense goal is to make a team one dimensional, and if I have a team that can only do one thing then the defense is already a step ahead. I will take a West Coast team like the 80’s/90’s 49ers over the Steelers or 00’s Rams any day.

#2- balanced offense

In a perfect world, number one, less bad things can happen, but in a realistic world, #2. That is pretty close to our philosophy. We really want to spread you out to be able to run the ball, but if you try to take that away, we can throw it pretty good too!

All things being equal, #1. We'd prefer to dictate our terms to the defense. I've found that having a physical, hard-nosed offense will often times be even more wearing on an opponent than a physical, hard-nosed DEFENSE. If your offense is blocking the snot out of people, that's 9 or 10 opponents that are getting physically beaten on every play. Defense, it's tougher because most of the time you're busy trying to get off of blocks and make plays, so the only guys you can consistently be physical with are the guys with the ball. Not to say that we don't teach all of our players to be physical...but I think it's easier to dictate your style of play through your offense if you want to be smashmouth.
Football should always be a powerful, physical game, no matter what formations you want to run. That's what makes football special and different from all other sports. This doesn't mean we line up with 3 TE's and 2 FB's all day, it just means that we teach our offense to be physical and smash people on every play.
Just to clarify, we've been closer to #2 in the past 5 years than #1, but you said all things equal and what would we PREFER to do...!

Balanced. I'm always going to face a different defense that is designed to stop certain types of plays, but "give up" others. Gotta be flexible and balanced to take advantage of those defenses.

So, tog, you would describe yourself as a hard-nosed, ball-control, Lombardi-type running coach then?

Now let me hijack the thread for a minute...IMO you do not have to be balanced to be balanced. In other words you do not have to be 50/50 or 60/40 if the defense knows that even though you might be 75/25 in favor of the run but you'e shown that on any given down you'll throw it creates a sense of balance. Which I guess is more like answer #2.

#1 is what I love but in my opinion if you want to go the championship you got to be balanced. Final Answer #2.

Exactly. It sure works for us here at Bob's Country Bunker.

Call me Hedge, I believe firmly in all three! Pound'em, outsmart'em, outcondition'em all wrapped into the same offense. I believe in being able to shift gears, we pride ourselves on being truly multiple, multiple to us is being able to go from "I" to five wide without missing a beat.

Ummmmmmm let's see, not sure how to answer this number 1, I am really confused by the answer run the ball, never sure exactly how to put my pound the ball off tackle into words. I will have to think tighten your chinstraps here we come about how I want to beat you up physically for 48 minutes by running the ball put my thoughts into words. I do not have the gift of dominating the clock beating you up being able to type real well. I will get back to you on this.

All things equal #2 allows you to be a little bit unpredictable. Make the defense guess their way into mistakes.

I would love to be a #1 but in reality am most often a sneaky version of #2. Our balance isnt just run vs Pass, but WHO we run with....we may run five running plays and use five different people to carry the ball while doing it (Including the Left Tackle)
