I was wondering if this is a common practice or more exclusive to Georgia, or more exclusively, to our region.
We have started "charging" $500/player to play. Now, there are ways around this, i.e., selling a stadium sign or raising the money. We also scholarship players on an as needed basis. We are a 5A school, the largest class, and other schools in our region charge up to $1000.
Is this common?

Here in Europe its very standard to charge players to play. All the teams I've played for have charged players anywhere from 200 to 500 dollars.

This is becoming more popular in our area in the private schools due financial problems. So far I have not of this taking place in public schools but I'm sure its not too far behind.

They did this at the small private school I helped at last. I think it was between $250-$500 to play football. I gotta say, it did cause some problems though. Lots of grumbling by the parents, especially in the cases where player talent margins are closer! Example= where Billy gets to start and enjoys most of the playing time, but is just marginally better than Johnny and both paid the same money to play? I hope hs football doesnt have to resort to this pay to play crap! Opens up too many cans of worms? los

We charge our boys for a transportation fee. It's $50 a season. Those that qualify for free and reduced lunch get a break/don't have to pay.

We charge $225, which includes their spirit pack (t-shirt, shorts, sweats, hoodie, game socks). They also get $20 of that back when they sell a book of raffle tickets.

here in my district in CA, the policy isnt state wide, it just foes district by district. Here each player has to pay a 100 dollar transportation fee, this fee can be waived if they are on free or reduced lunch

We do about 4 different fundraisers a year. Our kids paid for 7-on-7 t-shirts and a couple pair of UA socks 9about 16 bucks). The fundraising covers the rest.

Don't your states allow team boosters? I don't keep up with all the latest HS info. But, in Texas, I've never heard of a single school charging a player a penny- definitely not in the days that I played. Not only were we not charged, we ate at some pretty nice restaurants in some towns.

Christian school in South Florida. HS pays $135 per sport which includes spirit pack. 7th & 8th pays $95.
We've done this for 3 years now and our parents are used to it.
We also have a Booster Club that pays for EVERY team's uniforms (we got new ones this year!) as well as many big ticket items.

Not only were we not charged, we ate at some pretty nice restaurants in some towns. Yes we have a pretty large booster club. They just started the $500 this year and so far have had no complaints. All of the other schools in our region do it so to them we are just trying to keep up.

In our district the HS pays $180 for a sport and the middle school pays $105. We are a 1st ring suburb in the twin cities. I have heard costs both a bit higher and lower in the area, but not by much. There is a $450 family limit. So we tell them to have a bunch of kids in sports.

The last school I coached at, the school board would most likely drop football before they started charging kids.

We used to have a $10 transportation fee. The board eliminated that, so our kids pay nothing.

Our athletic fees went up this year to $35. For $35, they get BFS twice a week from April through mid-July, a two week offensive camp, five weeks of preseaon practice, and transportation to away games. This is for my middle school, by the way. Not bad, huh?

Also...i have heard of Permian charging....i dont think that it will trickle down to smaller schools....but it is possible.
