why is the DE numbered this way?
7---inside shade of TE 6---head up on TE 9---outside shade of TE
instead of ? 6i 6 7

I use 6i, 6, 7.
A lot of people go 7, 8, 9 on the TE. I haven't seen a lot of people that go 7, 6, 9

why is the DE numbered this way? 7---inside shade of TE 6---head up on TE 9---outside shade of TE instead of ? 6i 6 7 That's the original system created by Bum Phillips whne he was with Bear Bryant. Why they went 2i and 4i for inside shades on the OG and OT, but not on the TE? I've searched for the answer to that for many years -- never found it. Doesn't seem very logical, but it does seem to be the 'universal' system. I personally like the 6i, 6, 7 numbering better also.

I know the answer to that---Whiskey. It took too long for 0-5 and they were stumbling by the time they got to the DE.

Yeah we use the old bear bryant system of numbering. It's not any more or less defficult than any other way. Our guys pick it up just fine, we almost never get questioned on it. I do know that I wish there was a universal system, becuause it would make talking defense alot easier.

The Bear liked his bourbon. Got a little confused after he got past the offensive tackle. Nobody was going to question him, though. If he said six came after seven, well, the mathematicians were wrong.
Seriously, our kids have never had a problem with it. Tell them even numbers are head up first, then it makes sense (not so much if you teach it inside-out, 1-9 first).

I know some teams use 1-9 tech starting from inside shoulder of the OG and working out to the outside shoulder of the TE. The nose either lines up on a 0 (head up) or in a shade.

We call a DL shaded strong on the center a "plus" (+), shaded weak a "minus" (-). If nothing else it helps in press box coach communicating defensive alignment to me during games.

That's how we do it. We used the Phillips/Bryant way in college- and it does make sense RE: head up (2, 4, 6)... ours ends up being 2, 5, 8. Still, I like our way better, because I understand it more. Kids usually get the system figured out pretty well... whatever it is (6i, 6, 7 or 6, 7, 9 or 7, 8, 9 kids get it... it's us coaches who tend to go nuts about it and try to make sense of it all.)

We use 6i67. It's just easier for our kids to remember that any inside shade is an i.

On the TE I use 6i69 and 8 is out wide. Not sure why I do it, just say it in a playbook once and used it.
