I was told that there is a movement to 8 man football in our county. The school that is making the talk has over 1000 students. Has anyone else heard of bigger schools wanting to move to 8 man?

Haven't heard that. In fact in Oklahoma this year they forced a few teams to move up to 11-man because there were some smaller schools wanting to switch to 8-man.

If I remember right, there was an 8 man league in some major city (I thought it was Chicago...might be way off there). It had something to do with roster numbers. In Nebraska, 8 man has always been big, because there are so many small schools (over 125 play 8 man in NE). It is growing in Iowa as well (they just added 8 man within the last few years... I think around 40-50 play 8 man there). I see very few differences as far as techniques go... scheme wise- there are just some things that you can't do in 8 man that you can do in 11 man (mostly on defense- where the offense has 1 less eligible receiver, yet the defense has 3 less players to contend with that).

Having played 8 man in Okla when there were 24-28 teams.....it is far more popular now with over 60 teams playing......a lot of older, smaller 11 man schools have dropped down to 8 man over the years.....there is a lot of movement in some of the schools on the edge of 8 or 11.......its a wide open game with lots of points scored.......have to say as a reciever it was a blast........beat 1 man and its a footrace....one I usually lost!!!!...

We use 8-man football through the NFL Junior Player Development program for kids 12 to 14 years old in our area. The program is free, fully sponsored by the NFL, and growing. Volunteer coaches teach all positions to all players, life-skills, and then on the last day, we have a scrimmage. Kids are divided up into teams based on size and ability as evenly as possible. We keep it simple and focus on the main fundamentals of football. Here is a link if you want more information. www.nflyouthfootball.com/exec/NFLYP_JPD/JPD_SITES.cfm?publicationID=221

WY had 9 man for a while in the 90s. They discontinued it some time ago and only have 11 man. If there was 8 man there it was some time ago.
States that currently have 8 man include: NE (120+ schools), KS (2 divisions... must be a lot), OK (60+, I think), CO (40+ schools), CA, MT, ID (2 divisions, also probably a lot), WA, NV, IA (30+... growing), MO.
AZ had it... I'm not sure whether they still do or not.
I believe there are some states that have 8 man on a small scale for some private schools (generally in the mid-Atlantic region), but can not say this for sure.
