Every one of our fundraisers were hated by the kids. I was sitting around trying to figure out a way to get the kids to actually take an interest in one of them and see how much of a difference that actually makes. One of the ideas I came up with was having the kids get sponsors for a madden tourney with all the proceeds going to the program. I figure you put up a prize for the winning team (Maybe madden 09 the day it comes out? dunno) and either have the highest raising kid get first pick of teams or first pick in a fantasy draft right on down the line till the 32nd highest raising kid who gets the last pick.
I brought it up to a couple of the kids and they thought it was a great idea but I'm not sure how much they'd be able to raise (is $100 a kid realistic? We're a pretty wealthy community). $3200 would be pretty helpful...
So what do you think?

I have heard of this before with outstanding success. I am trying to talk the HC to do it so keep us updated on it so I can take actual numbers to him.

I was thinking of the same thing.. more so as a means of getting to know some of the kids in the school who might be able to help us out..
Going to give the winner a $100 gift card to Gamestop.. then if the winner can beat me.. he gets another $50 card..

I like it, it's definitely something that could generate buzz around the school too. Just a suggestion: Don't limit it to the players, open it up to any student in the school. It could bring in more $ and gets gets kids outside the program involved, maybe helping with school spirit a little.
I like the Gamestop gift card idea . . .

HAHAHA, I don't know if I could handle getting beat by one of my players in Maddens I would never hear the end of it. Good stuff though. Getting the TVs and PS2s/PS3s might be tough though right? Say, 20 kids participate...You'd need at least 5 TVs going at once, otherwise it would take hours.

Doesn't all have to be done in one day. Do it during lunch 1 game a day or after school 1 game a day make the poster/bracket public (in the hallway) and even have result in the daily announcements/school tv news.
Also consider using NCAA as well. Many times people including me prefer this over Madden. Its a whole different game with options etc.

Coach I like the idea, also if you open it up to people other than players you can charge an entry fee (donation to program) of like 10 - 25 bucks depending on interest and wealth of district. I like the sponser idea also though.

k,
how many kids in your school?
I think $10 per kid is a good number, plus anyone who wants to sponsor.
Maybe make it an annual thing or once per semester too.

I like it.
$10 per entry, 4 min quarters, play in exhibition mode so that both teams can be eagles/bears/skins etc.
-Have to play with "stock" depth charts- no jockeying around with subbing.
-no instant replaying- would slow tourney down...
Opened to the student population, I think that it could be an outstanding fundraiser. Easy and cheap- maybe give a prize to 1st/2nd place and t-shirts to the "sweet sixteen/great eight"

I had a reunion dinner with some former players last evening (10 of some of the best players our school has ever had). The were Jonesing for some video game action. We pulled the Wii out and played some Tennis. Got some great video of my 5 and 7 year old boys beating all of them. I mean, NOT EVEN LOSING A SET!!!! Then Madden came out. I put money on my 5 year old to beat one of the best QB's we've had...who also is a....well...let's say he is an extremely confident kid. They played "Rushing Attack" and sure enough....my 5 year old takes him out the first time we played.
The video I took is absolutely priceless of the players getting beat by my sons in Tennis. Each time my boys won my 7 year old turns to the masses and says............."NEXT"!!!!
Classic.

Like others have said I like NCAA better. I stopped playing Madden the year they had Ray Lewis on the cover and I went through 3 controllers after throwing them everytime I threw an INT. (which was alot). Maybe find out what game is more Popular with the kids.

Have 5 or so players volunteer to bring in their playstation 2 systems.. go rent several copies of the game if not enough kids have copies..
I have played several a game that was projected onto the white board in our coaching office..
Usually several projectors at your disposal in the school..

our leadership did this as an in school event to raise money
just plan it out well, they did a bad job of coordinating the time and started having to end games in the middle of them because they were running out of time.Go with real short quarters

no way on the NCAA. I love it, I don't even play Maddens anymore. BUT The kids love Maddens, parents would want to see their kids playing as Peyton Manning, etc. Also - the teams in Maddens are much more evenly matched. Remember, it's about what the kids love. Plus, I think a few NFL teams have option

k, how many kids in your school? I think $10 per kid is a good number, plus anyone who wants to sponsor. We're under 600 total enrollment but a pretty well off district so I don't think that it would be a problem to have the target figure for them to raise to be significantly higher but I'm new at this... Pretty much every kid has a 360 or PS3 or whatever. Shouldn't be a problem to get them to bring them in and we've got a ton of the computer projector things to use and pretty high quality TVs in every classroom. I'm sure I could borrow my department's class rooms for a Sat or something.

i love the idea and wanted to do it late in the school year last year, but couldnt coordinate it properly. if any of you guys who have had success with it could break it down, i would appreciate it. also, i havent played madden in 4 years. im strictly an ncaa guy. my wife refused to get me madden or let me play it in the house after the "incident". i had just lost a last-secoind game on a hail mary which ko'd me from the playoffs and i grabbed the cord and whipped the controller into the floor over and over until i was left holding a bunch of frayed wires and there was little chunks of plastic everywhere. and to top it all off, my 4 year old son watched the whole thing. im sure im not the only one who has gotten the "why cant you be an adult???" speech.

I did this last yar opened it up to the school, ended up getting 2 non fb players and closed it to 16 total. I had them play it all on a Fri night. Had to pay a $10 entry fee and gaev the winner $20. I just used it kind of a bonding thing and to gauge interest. It went over well we used NCAA and had 4 min qtrs. One thing I will change is to go on Heisman to speed things up, it took ALL night started at 6 and finshed at 2 am. Played the championship in the auditorium on a bnig screen playres at 6 ft tall prob 12 of the original 16 stayed.
Going to try something like this again in Feb jsut tweaking the mode and how to get more involved. Oh ya had 4 systems going at once as well.
Intersting side note is that I have a lot pf kids asking for a guitar hero tourny LOL

if you use madden, you add a twist by adding a bidding or higher fee for better teams.
10.00 entry for Dolphins, Jets etc.
30.00 entry for Pats,Colts, etc
