I heard some comments of some radio guys. They were talking about how ineffective Florida's run game is. Anywho, they were saying that in the SEC you need to be able to run the ball, ther were talking about the "gimmick" offense that Urban Meyer brought. They also said that Flordida might need to scrap the spread option because it's not working, the always start out strong but are always making the game close. I know Chris Leak is not "suited" for the spread option and doesn't look very comfortable. They didn't mention anything about Tebow, if I am not mistaken, he played in a similar offense in high school. How do you think he will fair in the future? Do you feel that Florida will have to scrap their O? IMO they won't have to, Tebow is a better runner than Leak.....

I don't think they'll scrap the system next year although Tebow is obviously a better "athlete" than Leak. I think they will do a lot of option stuff and may even resemble Arkansas's Wildcat look with McFadden. An interesting tidbit - Tebow was a "home school" student while playing for Nease HS in St. Augustine, FL and winning the State Championship as a senior. His parents are missionaries so the home school part is legit. What is interesting is that the FHSAA penalized Nease HS this year for "recruiting violations" which occurred during Tebow's senior year. The link is below www.fhsaa.org/news/2006/1107.htm

I believe the Gators will stay with the offense, especially with Tebow taking over next season...He may be a better version of Alex Smith when it is all said an done...yet that is a long ways away. People sometimes fail to recognize how well Florida actually runs the ball...They don't have a Darren McFadden, but they do have a multiple runner attack, with WR's, QB's, and RB's running the ball effectively. I think some sports guys look at the fact that they don't have a 1000 yard rusher and think that there isn't an effective attack there. I think the offense is excellent...very diverse and adaptable. He has adapted it to be successful with a pure drop back passer...not what he traditionally wants. What are your thoughts?

I believe that is why Meyer and Mullen are near the top of offensive minds in college. They take Leak who does not fit their system and still run the offense with a few wrinkles. They are part of the few that will do stuff "outside the box" in college football....which is why I like what they do.

Isn't Florida like 10-1?? Wow I guess the spread option is a real failure.

DO NOT forget about PERCY HARVIN, why would you not be running this offense with Harvin and Tebow on your team?

There is a word for what Arkansas is doing with Mcfadden and what Florida is doing with Tebow.

Florida is the biggest beneficiary (spelling wasn't my strong point) with the down years of miami and florida state. How many recruits changed their mind about where they were going when those 2 schools stunk it up this year and florida is a small miracle away from a national championship shot.

Wow...that is a pretty ridiculous statement...I would say that MOST major D-I schools are running some version of what Meyer started back at Bowling Green and Utah and does very well at Florida. The "spread option offense" isn't going anywhere...if anything, there will be MORE teams running versions of this in the future. That is evident big-time even in our high school conference. Just a few short years ago, we were the only team running shotgun spread formations and throwing the football. Everyone else in the conference was running some kind of Wishbone, Wing-T, or Power I offense. Now, EVERYONE in the conference is running at least some spread packages. It is kind of ironic. We went to the spread offense 10 years ago mainly because everyone else in the conference was smashmouth...we wanted to do something "different". Now, we are actually discussing cranking things back down to double-tight, multiple backs because everyone else is spreading it out. Gotta stay in front of the power curve!

All those dinks look at is the run stats. Do they actually pay attention during Florida's games??? The opposing defenses spend half of the game with 6-7 guys in the box vs 2x2 and 3x1 formations. Leaks passing numbers are very respectable; defenses are making him throw. Florida's averaging over 150 yrds on the ground per game; all most all of it out of the gun. They're ahead of traditional under center running teams like Auburn and Minnesota. They're also throwing for a respectable 240 a game giving them a total offense of 400 yards per game. Oh yeah, and they've also won 11 games.

Good post, Wildcat, and I think Tebow will be very good before all is said and done. I went on the record at my family's Thanksgiving dinner and said Tebow would win a Heisman before all is said and done. In this system, I really think it's possible for him to do so.

Nice article spreadattack. I have never really run a whole lot of the true SG spread option, but it just drives me nuts when I hear sports writers refer to it as "gimmicky" or as a "trick offense'. I heard one sports commentator making the same remarks about Navy's tried n' true Flexbone. If it isn't run on Sundays, its taboo. They feel that they're experts on the scheming of football, but they just don't have an clue. Here's the worst thing; these are the media guys that are voting in the BCS polls.
