Alright, we've got an interesting situation on our hands; I am coaching freshman this year and we're playing two games against a team in a larger class. They're just a few miles away and we play them every year.
However, this year, our two games against them are "B-Squad" games for them. Normally, they're just normal games with our best kids going at it. Now, I know they will be playing their smaller kids against us in this game as these two games are essentially the only full games these kids are going to see. These are the only b-games scheduled for them and their A schedule is freakin loaded...
So, here's my conundrum; we're a class smaller then them and thus have about 1/2-2/3s the number of kids they do. Would you guys play your best 11 in this situation, given that we're playing up a class, or just play our smaller kids also.? I already know what we're going to do here, but I'd like to hear some opinions.

Play the best 11...if you get up a couple TDs then sub as much as possible...to me this says to the kids that you want to win and you want everyone to be involved...
Some may argue that it is not that important to win at the frosh level but hey if they keep score then winning matters!

We start out the season with one of these games too- it'd be nice to come out of the gates hot.
As a freshman coach, I have always tried to find a happy medium between winning and getting all the kids as much playing time as possible. However, our AD has made winning games the priority for us. We have a 9 game schedule load with 3-4 games against teams in the class under us. So, we're thinking we can get our "B-kids" a ton of playing time during those games.
We're thinking that we'll play our best kids this first game and do exactly what you stated fbairattack. Put up as many points as we can initially and then sub liberally.
I had wanted to split the team into 2 even units and have them swap quarters on offense and defense. But, we don't have enough kids to do that.

It's a no-brainer. Just like fbairattack said, play your starters and assess the quality of your opponet. If you get up by a couple of scores, then sub your young (little) kids in and play accordingly. Don't treat it any different than a regular game because for you, it is a game.

Play your starters, as the game wears on and if you are ahead you can start subbing liberally.
